Additions offer functionality, security

Parents who have dropped off or picked up their students in the last few days no doubt noticed the new star-shaped benches in front of the Main Entrance. These concrete benches not only provide a place for our students to sit while waiting for their ride, but they add a layer of security, as have several other bollards.

In addition to the three concrete benches, which are each emblazoned with a different school or athletic logo, bollards have been added at various entrances to improve security and safety. One has been placed in front of the Robinson Auditorium entrance, and two high-visibility ones have been added at the Student Entrance.

The bollards are intended to protect these doorways from errant vehicles with an eye toward aesthetics while also allowing ample room for student egress.

"Improved security at these entrances enhances our overall safety profile," said President Steve Williamson.

Other school news: Two grants awarded
In other news, Providence has submitted two successful grant applications, one of which will continue the school's focus on safety enhancements. The first, $14,000 from the WHAS Crusade for Children, continues the school's longstanding partnership with WHAS. The student Penny Wars during Catholic Schools Week supports the Crusade and builds teamwork and community awareness. This grant supports the Learning Differences Program and Lab and sustains the school's collaboration with WHAS to serve the children of Southern Indiana.

The second grant is for $30,000 awarded by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis James P. Scott grant. The school's application centered on the redesign of the front driveway entrance to the school in order to complete the final phase of the envisioned 2012 Master Plan

"This first installment of $30,000 will be the seed money from which we develop the other funds needed to begin and complete a redesign of our driveway entrance," Mr. Williamson said. "For improved safety, security and traffic flow, this project will require additional fundraising and Pioneer community support."

Students' achievements honored

This past Sunday, many of our returning students were recognized for their academic achievements for the 2017-2018 school year. Some students received scholarships and book awards, while many others were honored for a full year of being on the honor roll. Students who were honored as the top students in their subject received Final Four T-shirts and can wear them to school tomorrow in recognition of their achievement. For a full list, click here.

Seniors enjoy 'trip of a lifetime'

For seniors Joe Gryboski and Tyler Upton, applying for the annual Indiana Electric Cooperative Youth Tour to Washington, D.C., was one of their best decisions as juniors. Both were accepted to represent their county - Tyler is from Clark County and Joe from Harrison County - and spent more than a week over the summer traveling with fellow Hoosier students to Gettysburg, Penn., and our nation's capital.

Teams start season with prayer experience

For many years, the Football team has held an annual tradition of blessing the players' helmets before the season-opening scrimmage. That tradition continues, and the team has added new ones, thanks to the influence of SportsLeader, a Catholic virtue-based formation program for coaches and directors of sports ministry. The program developed many spiritual based season opening activities for teams and their families, and several sports have implemented them, including Volleyball and Boys Tennis. Read more.

Girls Basketball developmental academy returns

The Providence Girls Basketball Academy, a developmental girls' basketball program for Deanery students is starting its 2018-19 season. An informational meeting for players and parents is on Sunday, Aug. 20. Seventh and eighth graders will meet at 7:00 p.m., and grades three to six at 6:00.

Pioneer Pass offers free admission

Deanery students are able to attend Providence home, regular-season sporting events for free with a Pioneer Pass and when accompanied by an adult. Providence coaches have passes available for distribution, and they are also available at entrances to sporting events and require parents to submit contact information. IHSAA rules restrict passes from being given to students not enrolled in a Deanery school. Email [email protected] for more info.

Parent Notes: Progress Reports, Picture Retakes

Progress Reports out soon

Progress Reports will be posted to Skyward next Friday. Parents should also watch for an email from Principal Dr. Mindy (Lankert) Ernstberger '74.

Picture Retake Day at end of month

Picture retakes are Friday, Aug. 31, for students who did not have their photo taken during registration or who are unhappy with their school photos. All students including seniors are required to have a yearbook photo taken, even if they do not wish to purchase any.

Photos will be taken in the Administrative Corridor during lunches. Order forms are available in the main office. Students unhappy with their original photograph must bring the entire original packet of photos. Students having retakes may dress up and must follow the guidelines in the handbook.

College Night for students and families

Save the date for College Night at PHS on Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. when several college representatives will be on campus to field students' and parents' questions about planning for and completing the college and scholarship applications. Open to all students and parents and especially upperclassmen.

Senior parents reminder

Seniors must have their yearbook photo taken at Whyland's Studio in Jeffersonville or Lifetouch in Highlander Point in Floyds Knobs. Please schedule an appointment soon.

Ms. Monica Vander Woude is thrilled to be able to share her faith and her relationship with God with her theology students. A recent graduate of Franciscan University of Steubenville (Ohio) with a double major in history and education, her role as theology teacher came about after she worked for a year as a consultant and then as a long-term substitute theology teacher at a Catholic high school in Louisville.
