Upcoming Service

"The Power of Shame and the
Power of Blessing"
Rev. Ed Brock

One of the lessons of my decades of experience as a minister has been the power of shame in the lives of individuals, families, and groups.

Conversely, experience has also taught me the power of blessing in the lives of individuals, families and groups.

I will explore how shame and blessing can be powerful forces in our lives and seek to help us be more aware of their influence and how we can address that influence.

Future Services
October 27 - Rev. Ed Brock
November 3 - Day of the Dead Service

"New UU" Class Continues
October 20 and 27

What does it mean to be a Unitarian Universalist? Guided by the Tapestry of Faith
Curriculum, we will offer a three-part series that explores important themes in UU
congregational life. - our worship and theology, history, covenant and polity, faith development, social justice, and membership. This program is particularly focused on introducing newcomers to Unitarian Universalism, but those of us who have been here for a while will also be able to share and connect with others as we explore our own beliefs and how they intersect with the UU tradition. Everyone is welcome!

Join us on October 20 and 27 for this chance to learn and share. Please come even if you cannot attend each session. Meet for coffee or tea at 9:00 a.m. in the Adult RE classroom; discussion starts at 9:15.

Contact Adult RE chair Lynsie Lamitie for additional information.

Picture Day Is Finally Here!

Thank you to everyone who signed up for the new photo directory. Please arrive for your appointment on time, or maybe even a little early. Our schedule is full!

Some things to remember:
  • You will receive one free 8x10 photo for participating.
  • Additional photos can be purchased. Pricing sheets are available in the Fellowship Hall so that you can budget accordingly.
  • If you do purchase photos, you will receive a 30% off coupon for Shutterfly. Photos will be available in plenty of time to order holiday cards.
  • If you bring a nonperishable food item, you will receive a $5 savings on your photo purchase.
  • Personalize your family portrait by bringing special mementos. If you have a child who plays an instrument, consider bringing the instrument with you. This is your photograph. Let it reflect your unique personality.
  • Pets are family and can be a part of the portrait.
  • We need volunteers to help set up the room after church on Sunday. Please stay a few minutes if you can. We also need a couple of greeters to work on photo days. A sign-up sheet will be available in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday.

Faith in Action Alabama
Meeting
on October 24

The next meeting of the Faith in Action Alabama Huntsville hub will be held on October 24 at 5:15 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church. The focus of this meeting will the upcoming FIAA statewide Voter Rights Restoration Campaign.

The state of Alabama is building more prisons, yet continues to strip deserving people of their voting rights while denying them full citizenship. Be among the first in Huntsville to receive political education training as we prepare to launch our upcoming 2020 Voter Rights Restoration Campaign: "Who Counts in Alabama?"

FIAA is encouraging each member church (UUCH is a member) to develop a team of people who are interested in joining this campaign and willing to work towards restoring voting rights for the thousands of people (mostly African American) who have lost their voting rights but are eligible to get those rights restored.

See the FIAA event's Facebook page for more info.  If you are interested in attending this meeting or would like additional information, you may also contact Brad Korb

Awareness Through Movement

A 5-week course of  Awareness Through Movement® classes begins Friday, October 25, at 10 a.m.

Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) classes are a learning process that invites a person to explore how they move and function in the world. The one-hour session consists of verbally directed movement sequences that encourage participants to explore motions within their own capacities and comfort range. As awareness and movement improve, the means to change patterns of thinking, sensing, feeling, and interacting with others also improves.

One More Chance to Attend a
 Cottage Meeting
Your Ministerial Search Committee (MSC) has been sponsoring cottage meetings to have group conversations about the search for a new settled minister. They are fun and informative, and there is one opportunity left for you to participate:

* Happy Hour at the home of Barbara and Gary Hitt, 4:00 p.m. this Saturday, October 19

We will discuss some of the results from our congregational survey, as well as gather new input to guide us in our search process. Don't miss this opportunity to hear what others have to say and to discuss the future of UUCH.

All members and friends are encouraged to attend.
Contact the MSC to let us know you would like to attend .

UUCH Participation in Rocket City Pride

We have a booth for Rocket City Pride this year, which will be held on October 26 at Butler-Green Field at Campus 805. We need any and all help to keep our booth manned and share the love of UUCH with Pride attendees.

The celebration lasts from 11AM-8PM, so we are hoping we can have pairs or trios work in small shifts.

Answering questions at Pride is an easy and fun way to let people know that we exist, and we might just be the home they've been searching for. To volunteer please contact Lynsie Lamitie or Dan McKitrick

 Coffee House to Showcase
UUCH Talent

Please join us in the Fellowship Hall on November 9 at 6:30 p.m. for a night of fun and great entertainment.   It will be like The Moth Radio Hour, a poetry slam, an open mic music night, So You Think You Can Dance, and The Comedy Store all wrapped into one event. And probably more!

You will be treated to coffee house-style light desserts, with coffee and espresso. Other drinks will also be available. We are working to put together an eclectic night of entertainment featuring the very talented members of the congregation and friends.

Please contact John Schulz with any questions, and especially if you want to sign up to present your personal style of art -- be it spoken word, music, dance or anything else. There is a sign-up poster in the Fellowship Hall.

Our goal is a great night with friends, sharing our many forms of personal expression. Be there, or be square!

 Property Work Day

Join us for a Property Work Day on Saturday, November 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Help to maintain our church property through fun, accomplishment, camaraderie, and pizza, with a bit of work! Transform the playground and courtyard, brighten the church, and beautify the grounds. Tasks will range from cleaning the playground and weeding flower beds to replacing light bulbs and painting.

No special skills are needed for most tasks, but if you have experience installing doors or doing minor electrical work or painting, all the better. Help out for an hour or several hours. Childcare will not be provided, but children are welcome to help.

Care List

This Sunday, October 13, 2019,  at our Circle of Candles:

John Sims Jeter lit a candle of  concern for his sister, Sena Jeter Naslund in Louisville, Kentucky. She is recovering from a fall and surgery to relieve bleeding and pressure on her brain. The fall also fractured her left arm.

The Delacey Clan lit a candle of sorrow: On Wednesday, our beloved cat, Linus, went into surgery to fix a blocked intestine and never came out of anesthesia. He was a vocal and loving part of our family, and we all feel a hole where our "Punky Punky" used to be. Love you, baby.

Erin Reid lit a candle of sorrow for the death of Glenna Colclough, a former professor of sociology at UAH, and a close friend to some of us at UUCH. She was an outstanding person.

Erin Reid lit candle of joy and sorrow for her upcoming leave as DRE. Gratitude to the church for making this possible so that she can spend time with her parents, who have some serious health issues, and also take some personal rest time. Special joy for the CYRE Leave Taskforce -- Steve Rittenberg, Harper Goodman, Jes Zelaya, and Audrey Fox -- and all the others who will coordinate the CYRE program in her absence.  A sorrow expressed for how much she will miss everyone, but she will still visit some services and special events and looks forward to that.
