The Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce Newsletter
Spring/Summer 2020 Newsletter
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hello Partners,

Hard to know where to start, but to say these have been challenging times for many of us may be an understatement. The good news is we are in phase 2 and eagerly look for phase 3 to start towards the end of June!
Please know that YOUR chamber has been working hard for you during this pandemic. Guiding information to you daily, facilitating pro-active programs and being diligent in maintaining a level of connectedness to our community, we have been busy.
The Chamber-Sponsored food delivery service program that benefits our local restaurants in supporting our local hospitals, non-profits, food pantry and soup kitchen has been very successful. Aiding both those in need and creating an additional revenue stream for our restaurants. We have continued to sponsor our general membership meetings through zoom and hope by September we may be able to start hosting face-to-face ones!
The office has been open, albeit not our standard number of hours, but still 5 days a week.  We have raised over $2,000 from our raffle and will be receiving a stipend from the SBA EIDL.  These monies will aid in keeping the Chamber going and paying essential costs.
There is hope that in September we will still have a ‘Dragon Boat Race Festival’ scheduled for the 19th.  The festival will most likely be on a smaller scale, with the emphasis on the racing teams.
The summer of 2020 is not all lost, though not the banner season we were ALL prepared for, but nevertheless if will be salvaged!  There will be activity and businesses will start recouping their losses and a brighter fall season we will all look for.  The Chamber is here and your resource to continually help you through these unprecedented times.
Be well and safe,

Thank you,

Mary Joy Pipe

CHAMBER CHATTER
Congratulations to Icon Properties for helping to raise $1,614 that went towards the donation of 400 Easter Baskets! Baskets were delivered to not-for –profit organizations including our own Chamber Partner-Harbor Christian Church.  Even though we were in the beginning the pandemic their generosity went a long way for children in need or underserved.  Thank you for your contributions to our community!

Look for the new signage for the old Harbor Grill restaurant…’SaGhar, Indian Fusion Restobar’
Indu Kaur the owner is excited in introducing Indian food with a twist. There is plenty of outdoor dining so PLEASE check out this new addition to our restaurant community!

Thank you to RGR Medical Management, principles-Robert Drago and Gina Scalone for the donations of 2000 face masks! They are available to any Chamber Partner that needs them, can be picked up at the Chamber office.

Port Jefferson Farmers Market is open! It will be down at the Harborfront Park.  Even during the pandemic the market opened and gave our community a sense of normalcy.  Please patronize all great vendors.

Metered parking is still suspended. No date for starting has been given.

WHAT HAS BEEN GOING ON!!!
Although the Chamber had to cancel/postpone our Health & Wellness Fest we are looking forward in producing our 7th annual PJ Dragon Boat Race Festival scheduled for September 19th. The venue will be the beautiful harbor front park and we are anticipating 15-16 racing teams!

In cooperation initially with the BID and now being solely run by the Chamber, our food service program for the underserved, local food pantry and soup kitchen-Welcome Friends has been very successful.  Primarily started with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, generous donations were made to deliver meals to our front-line health care workers at our 2 local hospitals.  As the crisis has died down and the hospitals no longer wanted meals, the Chamber has expanded this service for other organizations that were still in very much in need.  This program will continue until funds are exhausted.

Your chamber has been actively involved in representing our membership in three task forces; Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers, Port Jefferson Village and Town of Brookhaven.  Giving a voice to your concerns in these very fragile economic times and being pro-active with communications to our Town, County and NY State elected officials.
