We are pleased to share with you news on our latest work in policy research and evaluation.  Among other noteworthy news and updates, this issue of the Newsletter highlights some of our ongoing and expanding international work, as well as
the deepening of our data analysis and program evaluation work, both locally and nationally.  
 
This issue also recognizes Chris King's retirement from teaching at the LBJ School. In addition to directing the Center for eighteen years and teaching for twenty-six years, Chris also found the time to serve on dozens of MPA, MA, and PhD committees.  As one of his many former students, I can attest to Chris's dedication to us and to his commitment to improving the lives of the disadvantaged by equipping his students with the knowledge and skills to be effective agents for change in society.  This dedication earned Chris numerous awards during his time with the LBJ School, including the Mike Hogg Professor of Urban Management at the LBJ School (2003-2013), Texas Ex's Teaching Award (2007), Staff Appreciation Award (2001), and the Dean's Staff Excellence Award ("...for research and commitment to teaching," 1994).  While the LBJ School will certainly miss him, Chris will continue his research, primarily on his Two-Generation work, at the Center, for which we count ourselves very fortunate!
 
The Ray Marshall Center envisions a world where sound, responsible policies and programs reduce poverty and advance human potential.

Chris King retires from academia

After 26 years of teaching, RMC Senior Research Scientist Dr. Chris King retired from his role as Lecturer at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the end of June 2017.  Click here to read more about his contributions and impact on the School.  
 
Heath Prince and Ashweeta Patnaik present at annual AEA conference

RMC Director and Research Scientist Dr. Heath Prince along with Social Science Research Associate Ashweeta Patnaik participated in two panel discussions at the American Evaluation Assocation's annual conference Evaluation 2017: From Learning to Action from November 6-11, 2017.  Click here to read more about the two panels. 
 
Ray Marshall Center enters agreement with City of Austin to examine youth STEM-CE programming

RMC Director and Research Scientist Dr. Heath Prince along with Associate Director and Research Associate Dr. Greg Cumpton entered into an interlocal agreement with the City of Austin for process development, data collection, and analysis of youth-focused programs in science, technology, engineering, math, creative and entrepreneurship workforce development programs.  Read more about the agreement here. 
 
Chris King presents two-generation strategies to the ACT Workforce Summit

RMC Senior Research Scientist Dr. Chris King was invited to present his two-generation findings to the attendees of the ACT Workforce Summit held at the Hyatt Regency Austin on October 25, 2017.  Click here to read more. 
 
Chris King talks implementing strategies at 2-Gen Talk-Back Convening
On October 25, 2017, RMC Senior Research Scientist Dr. Chris King traveled to Baltimore to present his two-generation research Implementing 2-Gen Strategies: Models, Research & Lessons to the 2-Gen Talk-Back Convening hosted by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.  Click here to view his presentation.
Daniel Schroeder invited to child support policy roundtable
RMC Research Scientist Daniel Schroeder was invited to attend the Roundtable for Building the Next Generation of Child Support Policy Research held on October 17-18, 2017 in Washington, DC.  The invitation-only event was hosted by the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) and MEF Associates and explored key child support policy research questions.  Given Daniel's experience and expertise, he was identified as an important contributor to the goals of the roundtable.
Heath Prince participates in Texas 2030

RMC Director and Research Scientist Dr. Heath Prince was a panel participant at Texas 2030 - Texas in a Changing World Economy: A Symposium organized and hosted by LBJ School professors Ken Flamm and Jamie Galbraith at the School in Austin on October 16, 2017.  The event focused on the future of public policy in Texas.  Read more about the symposium here. 
 
Heath Prince awarded behavioral economics grant from Netherlands Scientific Research Organisation

RMC Director and Research Scientist Dr. Heath Prince was awarded a Netherlands Scientific Research Organisation's Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights grant for work in Jordan.  The two-year project, in partnership with the Jordan University for Science and Technology and colleagues from Brandeis University, will implement a behavioral economics experiment designed to increase the persistence of modern family planning methods at clinics in Northern Jordan.  Read more about the project here.  
 
Ahweeta Patnail and Heath Prince partner with Nuru International on second project

RMC Social Science Researcher Ashweeta Patnaik and Director and Research Scientist Dr. Heath Prince are Co-Principal Investigators on another grant from Nuru International, this time to assist in the development of a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation plan for Nuru's anticipated programming in Nigeria.  Read more about the project here.  
 
UNRISD publishes an Event Brief focusing on main messages from the Johannesburg workshop
In May 2017, the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) partnered with the University of Johannesburg's Centre for Social Development in Africa (CSDA) to host a three-day Global Research Workshop that brought together the researchers and experts working on their project New Directions in Social Policy: Alternatives from and for the Global South to present their research findings and discuss themes that crosscut the case studies.  RMC Director and Research Scientist Dr. Heath Prince, a collaborating researcher at UNRISD, attended the workshop along with RMC alum Amna Khan.  Click here to read more about the workshop and the brief.
Ashweeta Patnaik pens blog post about RMC's evaluation of Nuru International initiative
RMC Social Science Research Associate wrote a blog post about lessons learned from our evaluation of Nuru International's integrated and holistic international development model for the American Evaluation Association's AEA365 blog.  Click here to read more.

Ray Marshall Center hosts workforce development capstone conference with the Federal Reserve System
The Ray Marshall Center and the LBJ School of Public Affairs, in conjunction with the Federal Reserve System, the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University, and the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research, hosted Investing in America's Workforce: Improving Outcomes for Workers and Employers capstone conference as part of an ongoing workforce development initiative.  The event was held in Austin, TX, from October 4-6, 2017.  Click here to read more about the conference and initiative.

Chris King attends 2017 ILO workshop in Prague
RMC Senior Research Scientist Chris King, along with Dr. Burt Barnow from the George Washington University, traveled to the Czech Republic to present research on evaluating labor policies in the United States.  The workshop, hosted by the International Labour Organization, was held from June 26-30, 2017.  Click here to read more about it.
Heath Prince attends COSEBOC's "Improving Educational Experiences and Outcomes for Young Men of Color" meeting

On April 26, 2017, Dr. Prince attended the meeting hosted by the Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color (COSEBOC) and the Executives' Alliance for Boys and Men of Color.  The meeting convened local and national experts focused on education policy and practice as it relates to boys and young men of color.  Click here to read more about the meeting and sponsors.
Chris King featured on NPR Ed interview

The Community Action Project of Tulsa (CAP Tulsa) has released a new study on the first year impact of the CareerAdvance program.  NPR Ed's Eric Westervelt has been following the program and interviewed Chris King and Teresa Ekrich Sommer of Northwestern University on April 28, 2017.  Click here to read more about it.
