CMS Annual Meeting: COMPAC lunch to feature candidates for lieutenant governor
A little more than one month remains to register yourself and your family for the 2018 CMS Annual Meeting, Sept. 14-15 in Vail. This just in: Both candidates for Colorado lieutenant governor will attend Saturday's COMPAC luncheon to discuss health care and take questions from the audience.
Additionally, attendees will engage in learning on risk management, treating mental illness in the general medical setting, physician wellness, health care costs, and more. COPIC points are available.
The fabulous Inaugural Gala, celebrating the beginning of the presidency of Deb Parsons, MD, concludes the meeting with socializing, dinner and dancing with the Nacho Men. Sunday is completely open for a relaxing day in Vail.
The deadline to book or change lodging at the Vail Marriott Mountain Resort under the CMS group rate is coming up on Aug. 23. On this date, guests will be charged one night's stay to the credit card that was used during booking.

Colorado Consortium Education Symposium: Best Practices for Pain Management and Addiction Treatment - Oct. 24
Wondering what you can do to help fight the opioid epidemic? Interested in learning about how you can incorporate medication-assisted treatment in your practice?
Join health care providers from across the state the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 24, for the 1st Annual Colorado Consortium Education Symposium: Best Practices for Pain Management and Addiction Treatment. Experts in preventing and treating opioid use disorders will be discussing the latest research and best practices you can incorporate into your practice. The symposium will be held at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora.
The misuse and abuse of prescription opioids is a major public health crisis in Colorado, contributing to a dramatic rise in drug overdose deaths. According to data from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, 1,012 people died of drug overdoses in 2017, with 373 people dying of overdoses related to prescription opioids.
The event will review non-opioid pain management and best practices around medication-assisted therapy (MAT) for opioid use disorders.
The Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention is organizing the event. MDs and DOs who attend are eligible for continuing medical education credit. All others will be given a certificate of completion to submit to their professional societies.
The symposium begins at 6 p.m. and will include a poster session, networking opportunities, and heavy hors d'oeuvres. Guests are welcome to attend the Consortium's annual meeting the next day, Thursday, Oct. 25.

AMA: Block the Aetna-CVS merger
The AMA issued a press release Aug. 8 urging the U.S. Department of Justice to block the proposed acquisition of Aetna, Inc. by CVS Health Corporation. The press release -- "AMA Urges DOJ to Challenge CVS-Aetna Merger" -- highlights the 29-page exhaustive AMA analysis that was shared with federal regulators indicating that the proposed merger would likely substantially diminish competition in many health care markets to the detriment of patients.

The merger was first proposed in December 2017 and in February 2018 the AMA submitted a statement to the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Regulatory Reform, Commercial and Antitrust Law in anticipation of a hearing to lay out the argument that this merger had the potential to decrease competition in Medicare Part D, pharmacy benefit manager services, local health insurance, and many local retail pharmacy markets, and therefore should be closely scrutinized.
