Volume II Issue 7 ~ October 13th, 2019

1. Academics Spotlight

In line with the NGSS, biology students in Mrs. Maemoto's class engaged in an inquiry design lab where they came up with their own procedures to explain what substance gets altered during the chemical reaction between liver and hydrogen peroxide. It was fascinating to see how each group came up with different ways to test their claims. Students then made Claim Evidence Reasoning posters to show what they did and then engage in a peer review. The students did an amazing job coming up with their own experimental designs and analyzing their data to support their claim.

2. Athletics Spotlight

Football beat Centennial 48-0.

Boys Water Polo beat Foothill 8-7 to make their record 14-7 with an 8 game winning streak!

Girls Volleyball lost to Redondo. They also played in the Redondo Tournament and beat Santa Monica, Oaks Christian, Scripps Ranch, and Notre Dame Academy and lost to Clovis West to go 4-1 and finish 5th in the tournament.

Girls Golf beat Santa Monica twice with scores 186-290 and 161-276.

Girls Tennis lost to Mira Costa is a close match that came down to wins on games 87-79.

Cross Country boys took 2nd place and girls took 12th place at the Clovis Invitational. Savannah Scriven broke the PVHS all-time record for the Woodward Park course and Samantha Stemen was ranked #5 overall!

4. Surf Team Spotlight

5. PVIT Spotlight

Congratulations to the PVIT VEX team for bringing home the Excellence Award this weekend from the Supernova Spectacular VEX Competition in North Hollywood! These robotics enthusiasts have been working long hours, designing, building and testing robots since May to play this year's Tower Takeover game. This amazing robot can stack FIVE lightweight, ie. very tippy, 5.5" cubes, drive to a designated spot, and place them perfectly in a 10" square, all within 15 seconds, and ALL AUTONOMOUSLY - that means with no driver. In driver mode, it can stack 10 cubes high in two loads, with a robot that must fold up to be smaller than 18". You do the math - it's quite a feat! We are very proud of this team for winning the prestigious Excellence Award, the highest award presented to a team that exemplifies overall excellence in a high quality robotics program shown through dedication, devotion, hard work, and teamwork. It also qualifies the team to compete in the State Championships this Spring. Come watch these young engineers compete in the PVHS gym on Sat, Dec 14 at our own tournament! 6. Yearbook Spotlight

ASPA AWARDS TRITON YEARBOOK OUTSTANDING HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOK 2019!

This week, the American Scholastic Press Association critique arrived for the 2019 Palos Verdes Triton Yearbook and the student staff of photographers, writers, designers received two honors: Most Outstanding High School Yearbook and First Place with Special Merit. Both of these awards are the highest accolades offered from this national press association. Congratulations to the Triton leaders and to Adviser Ms. Pavelka.

7. Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight

Continuing with BTC's mission to celebrate and honor a variety of diverse cultures, BTC planned their second school wide event for Hispanic Heritage Month. The MPR was packed with students who had the opportunity to learn a traditional Jarabe Tapatio dance. All of the students who attended had a great time and were able to experience and learn about important traditions and customs of another culture.

8. Comedy Sportz Spotlight

Comedy Sportz took on ASB and BTC leadership groups this week in the annual leadership match. In front of a sold out crowd our students had the audience laughing the whole time with a variety of improv games played throughout the night. In the end BTC and ASB beat the Comedy Sportz team by 2 points. Great match everyone!

9. Student Spotlight

Abbie Maemoto is a current

junior and this past summer she created a social networking site called Our Science Connection in hopes of connecting high school students in different communities with research organizations and college students to help students find

unique science and STEM-related opportunities, such as internships and volunteering. She was inspired to create this after she saw an increasing amount of students trying to get involved in science opportunities in local communities but they didn't know where to start. The website is ourscienceconnection.com ;

All students have to do is sign up, and join the Palos Verdes High group on the site! Students can post research papers that they have written or are interested in, ask questions in the main forum, post polls, learn about new science opportunities in different cities, and chat with other members on the site. Her mission through this site is to connect students in the South Bay who are passionate about science to organizations and people who are willing to network with high school students so that everyone has the equal opportunity to explore their passions and develop a strong foundation for a future in science.

College Week starts today! We will be kicking off the week with bracelet making in Sea King park. Students can create bracelets with the colors of their favorite colleges.
CSF Fall Membership Drive begins Monday, October 14 and runs through Friday, October 25^th. Applications are available online at https://pvhs.pvpusd.net/apps/pages/academics-clubs-csf, Room 316, or the library. Completed applications and $20 check or cash may be dropped off during Lunch in the library or Room 316. No late applications will be accepted. All details are included on the application.
