Roger Naylor Program on Arizona State Parks
|
Award-winning travel writer Roger Naylor is this month's speaker for the Library's "Our Earth, Our Habitat, Our Home" environmental program series.
 During his presentation, Roger will share excerpts and photos from his latest book, "Arizona State Parks: A Guide to Amazing Places in the Grand Canyon State." He will describe the scenic wonders and rich history found in Arizona state parks, and he'll recommend some of the best hiking, camping, fishing, boating, stargazing, and wildlife watching.

Tuesday, November 5, for this free program. Everyone who attends the event will receive a free day pass for Arizona state parks. The author's books will be for sale following the program, and he will be available to sign them.
 Sedona Public Library's environmental series is supported by a grant from the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records, a division of the Secretary of State, with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

 Dia de los Muertos: Celebrate the Day of the Dead with us all day on Friday, November 1, at the Library. Visit our "photo booth" and adorn yourself as a Catrina or a sugar skull. We'll have a face painter from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., coloring pages, a puzzle, and a Dia de los Muertos scavenger hunt. The day will end with Poetry and Prose, with spooky readings, music, and refreshments.
- Poetry and Prose Project: Join us on Friday, November 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the community room, for a special Halloween/Dia de los Muertos-themed program, with host Gary Every. Featured guests include slam poet The Klute, cowboy poet Michael Coyote Peach, and musical guests Wendy Harford, Scott Sanders, and Gary Scott.
- Book Discussion: Everyone is invited to attend a discussion of the book "Finish Strong," by Barbara Coombs Lee, President of Compassion & Choices. Three chapters of the book, a guide to achieving a positive end-of-life experience, will be discussed at each of four bi-monthly events in November and December. Discussions will be held on Monday, November 4 and 18, and Monday, December 2 and 16, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the community room. Participants are encouraged to purchase books prior to attending.
- Conversational French Group: The group will meet on Tuesday, November 5 and 19, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Quiet Study. Intended for intermediate-level speakers, the group provides an opportunity for those with some prior knowledge to practice their French.
- Healthy Aging Lecture Series: The final lecture in the series "Chinese Secrets to Healthy Aging and Longevity," taught by Mike Yuen, PhD, will be held on Tuesday, November 5, at 2 p.m. in the community room. The title of this lecture is "Unwinding Practice: A Simple yet Profound Method for Daily Self-Repair." This free program is open to the public.
- Drum Circle: Join us for an interactive drum circle and music jam lead by Paul Blasi on Tuesday, November 5, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and on Friday, November 15, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. All are welcome at this free program.
- Conversational Spanish Group: The group meets every Wednesday evening, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Library. Note there will be no meetings on November 20 and 27.
- Cryptocurrency Group: Interested in investing in cryptocurrencies? You're invited to attend meetings of the Crypto group every Thursday from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Quiet Study. Note there will be no meeting on Thanksgiving. This free program is open to the public.
- Coffee with a Veteran: The women of SedonaKind will be providing brunch at our November 8 event. The speaker will be Spence Peterson, of the Prescott Veterans Administration, who will talk about services available through the VA. Coffee with a Veteran is held on the second Friday of every month from 10:00 a.m. to noon in the community room. Everyone is welcome.
- Blood Drive: Make a difference in your community by giving blood at the Red Cross Blood Drive on Tuesday, November 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the community room.  Book Club: Join us at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12, in the Quiet Study for a discussion of "All the Light We Cannot See," by Anthony Doerr.
- iPad/iPhone/Mac Workshop: The Oak Creek Apples Macintosh User Group is offering a general question-and-answer workshop on iPads, iPhones, and Mac computers on Saturday, November 16, from 10 a.m. to noon in the community room. Pre-registration is suggested for this free program by emailing [email protected]. All are welcome.
- Socrates Cafe: The group, a forum for discussing fundamental human questions, will meet on Monday, November 18, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., in the Quiet Study. Please RSVP at the reference desk for this free program.
- Nonfiction Book Club: The group will meet on Tuesday, November 26, at 4 p.m. in the Quiet Study. This month's selection is "The Line Becomes a River," by Francisco Cantu.

American Creed Screenings and Discussions
|
On
Thursday, November 7, the Library, in partnership with OLLI of Sedona and the League of Women Voters of the Greater Verde Valley, will host two screenings of the PBS documentary film
American Creed. The first screening is at 11 a.m. in the Library's community room, and the second is at 6 p.m. the same day at
OLLI of Sedona, Room 34. Each screening will be followed by a community conversation facilitated by Dr. Paul Friedman, of OLLI.
In
American Creed, former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David M. Kennedy come together from different points of view to investigate the idea of a unifying American creed.
American Creed community conversations are scholar-facilitated discussions that mirror the type of conversation Rice and Kennedy have in the film; one designed to engage Americans in reflection and dialogue about their own part in the American story, and in acting to shape that story for the better.

- Monday, November 4, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., community room: Sue Lefebvre, a volunteer for a humanitarian aid organization supporting migrants, will speak about her book "No More Deaths." The book addresses the immigration crisis in the Southwest and documents the stories of volunteers who provide life-saving assistance to migrants.
- Wednesday, November 6, 6:30 p.m., community room: The Honorable Judge Charles B. Schudson will read from his book "Independence Corrupted: How America's Judges Make Their Decisions." Stay Human at the Reel Life Movie Night film series on
Tuesday, November 26. In this inspiring film, award-winning musician Michael Franti takes the viewer on a personal journey through his songs and stories of extraordinary humans who inspire him to overcome cynicism with optimism and hope.
Reel Life Movie Night is held on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the community room.

Arizona Humanities Program: Celebrate Veterans Day by attending a speaker program about the original "fly girls." On Monday, November 11, at 1:30 p.m., Natalie J. Stewart-Smith will present "The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) of World War II." At this program, Stewart-Smith will share the stories of brave women fliers who had to fight for the right to be called veterans.
The program will be held at the Church of the Nazarene, 55 Rojo Drive in the Village of Oak Creek. Sponsored by Arizona Humanities and Friends of the Sedona Library, the presentation is free and open to the public.
- Community Book Discussion: Participate in the community book discussion of "Next Year in Havana," by Chanel Cleeton, on Tuesday, November 26, at 1:30 p.m. at Sedona Winds. If you need assistance placing a hold, please contact the Library.
Community book discussions, sponsored by the Library and facilitated by library staff, are the last Tuesday of every month. They are free and open to the public.
