PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear Colleagues:
I hope this message finds all of you well and thriving, both professionally and personally. As the new president of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, I would like to bring all of you up to speed on the most recent news within the College.
First and foremost, we just completed our annual scientific program as an ACVSMR-branded track within the ACVS Surgery Summit in Las Vegas. The scientific program included half-days of canine and equine specific scientific presentations as well as presentations of our top-rated scientific abstracts. In addition, our annual general membership meeting was held during our track. For those that were unable to attend, I will highlight some of the news here:
- We thanked the members of our Board of Directors that were completing their terms, and welcomed new members of the Board. Dr. Kevin Haussler, who served as ACVSMR president from 2017-2018, stepped down from the Board as he completed his term as past-president. That office is now filled by Dr. Chris Zink, and Dr. Elizabeth Davidson has stepped into the office of ACVSMR vice president. Dr. Nina Kieves moved from vice-president to president-elect, and will take over from me in a year at our meeting in Washington DC. We also thanked Dr. Rob Gillette for his service as canine regent (as well as his many years of service in helping start our College) and welcomed Dr. Sarah Love to the Board as the new canine regent.
- Our next meeting will be at the ACVS Surgery Summit in Washington DC on October 23, 2020. The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Marti Drum, and our canine and equine programs have been filled and approved by the BOD. However, we have NOT filled the scientific abstract program - that will be filled early next year with abstracts submitted by YOU by January 31, 2020. As in the past, abstracts will be reviewed by the Continuing Education Committee and the top three abstracts within each species-track (canine or equine) will be selected for presentation and awarded cash prizes. NEW FOR THIS YEAR is that abstract winners will receive complimentary registration to the meeting, compliments of ACVSMR.
- The Board of Directors have approved several changes to the ACVSMR by-laws, and now these changes must be submitted to the general membership for ratification. The changes range from minor changes in wording that simply keep our by-laws current with the regulatory structure of the American Board of Veterinary Specialties to important changes in the structure and function of our various committees. Also included in these changes is the revision of our College mission statements. As many of you may recall, several months back we conducted a membership survey on revising our mission statement, and using the feedback obtained through those surveys the BOD crafted a simplified mission statement that we feel will be instrumental in helping define our place in the veterinary profession, both in the eyes of our fellow veterinarians as well as the general public. A poll will be issued next month using the same mechanism as our elections for new board members, so keep an eye out in your inbox for this electronic ballot. IT IS VITALLY IMPORTANT that everyone cast their vote to ensure that our by-laws reflect the wishes of our membership.
- The American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation achieved full recognition by the AVMA in April, 2018. During the initial 8 years, our leadership focused on developing our training and certification programs and meeting the ABVS/AVMA requirements for full recognition, while most other activities necessarily received a lower priority. Having cleared that very important hurdle, we now have the ability to look further into the future. To that end, the BOD is in the final stages of planning a retreat for the purpose of formulating a strategic plan for our College. Our goal is to establish a set of priorities and a plan for acquiring and allocating resources to meet those priorities, all with the thought of establishing a unique and meaningful identity for our College within the veterinary profession. The first stage of that strategic plan will be to reach out to you - the diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation - to find out what YOU believe should be the highest priority. When that survey arrives in your in-box, please give it some thought and be sure to respond.
It is my honor to serve as president of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation for the next 12 months, and look forward to working with all of you to advance both our College and the veterinary profession.
Sincerely,
Michael S. Davis, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, DACVSMR
President, American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation

Help Build a Resource Library for Veterinary Students!
The public relations committee of ACVSMR is hoping to develop sports medicine and rehabilitation student clubs in veterinary schools. We are conducting a survey of all U.S. veterinary schools and are planning to establish contact with advisors of existing clubs. In addition, we will be reaching out to faculty at the remaining schools offering assistance in developing student clubs.
For our organization to be most beneficial to these student clubs, we are now requesting that ACVSMR diplomates help us to create a library of resource materials. These can include case reports (canine and equine), webinars, and videotapes of clinical conditions with diagnosis, etc. We will make these resources available to student club advisors for use in club meetings, crediting those who have supplied the resources.
We expect interest to be high and are hoping that you will support us in this effort by helping to build our library. Please contact Dr. Linda Blythe,
[email protected]. Thank you!

Send Us Your Photos and Success Stories!

Help us spread the word about rehabilitation and sports medicine by sharing photos and success stories of your activities! Please send your photos with captions and success stories to
[email protected]. We will acknowledge you and/or your practice in the credits of each photo. Thank you!
