The Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ) describes it as “a powerful solution to improving patient safety within your organization. An evidence-based teamwork system to improve communication and teamwork skills among health care professionals.” We will first explain specific pertinent components of this program as it relates to Clostridium difficile Infection (CDI) Initiative. And, lastly, we will talk about how you can apply it to your infection control program or really any facet of care in your community.

National Nursing Home Quality Care Collaborative (NNHQCC)

Nursing homes in Arizona, California, Florida, and Ohio have worked hard to implement Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement (QAPI), reduce the use of antipsychotic medications, track CDIs, and achieve a quality measure composite score of six percent or less. With the end of this collaborative fast approaching. HSAG will celebrate NNHQCC achievements, share best practices, and success stories.
 
Objectives:
  • Review NNHQCC goals for the quality measure composite score and antipsychotic medication and their outcomes.
  • Review progress being made with CDI reporting with the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN).
  • Analyze success stories from NNHQCC nursing homes and the next steps for 2018 and beyond.
Online Nursing Home Training Sessions
Purpose of the Online Nursing Home Training Sessions  
  • To provide nursing home leaders with a set of training materials that they can use to enhance understanding of important concepts and practices that promote effective communication, antibiotic stewardship, and C. difficile prevention; and to provide information, tools, and resources to take action to improve practices.
  • To provide an opportunity to apply for certificates of participation or a total of 11.3 nursing continuing education credits at no cost.
  • To develop and disseminate materials that can be accessed and used by long-term care (LTC) partners and stakeholders interested in these topics.

to Promote Quality and Safety; Session 1
Welcome and Overview

This session features communication strategies to promote quality and safety. It is designed to help train nursing home staff members in teamwork and communication using specific evidence-based tools and strategies which are a part of TeamSTEPPS 2.0. The session will provide an overview of the TeamSTEPPS framework and competencies and explore specific TeamSTEPPS tools and strategies as a way to improve teamwork and enhance resident safety. This session incorporates specific strategies and principles tailored to the LTC environment.
 
This session is one of a series of six sessions for nursing home s to support implementation of principles and practices of antibiotic stewardship and prevention and management of C. difficile infections. 

Learning Objectives
  • Describe the TeamSTEPPS model, including the communication strategies.
  • Examine the value of adopting TeamSTEPPS as a way to improve teamwork to enhance resident safety.
  • Use specific TeamSTEPPS communication strategies to improve quality and safety in daily work.
