Can Watching Movies Detect Autism?
[Source: Medical X-Press]

Measuring children's gaze patterns as they watch movies of social interactions is a reliable way to accurately identify nearly half of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) cases, according to a new study just published in Autism Research by Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) researchers.

"Eye tracking is likely to be one of the first technologies that will be incorporated into clinical use for assessment of ASD symptoms, but it needs to be optimized to identify and quantify specific ASD

On Halloween, Blue Buckets Ease Way For Kids Who Are Nonverbal
[Source:  Disability Scoop]

Last year, Halloween was a challenge for Luke Taylor.

His mom, Omairis Taylor, didn't think he'd need to carry a blue bucket indicating he had autism; he was so little at age 2, she reasoned, that she could just speak for him. But after four or five houses, it was clear that Luke, who is nonverbal, was feeling stressed. Other kids lined up behind him as well-meaning grown-ups waited for him to say "trick or treat."

Autism and Exercise
[Source: Medical X-Press]

Perceptual and Motor Skills recently published research on autism and exercise.  The researchers examined the effects of a 48-week exercise-based intervention for 64 children (ages 6-12) with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Previous research indicates that children with autism may have limited levels of physical activity and delayed motor skills and physical fitness, leading to a higher incidence of overweight and obesity, and associated health complications in children with ASD.

How 'Knowing Less' Can Boost Language Development in Children
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

Children may learn new words better when they learn them in the context of other words they are just learning-according to new research from the University of East Anglia.

Researchers investigated how 18-24-month-olds learn new words-in the context of words they already know well and those they don't.

The findings help explain how children learn new words and suggest a new way that parents and carers could help boost language development.

Anxiety & Depression Don't Vary With Teens' Time on Social Media
[Source:  Psych Central]

A new eight-year study suggests the amount of time teens spend on social media is not directly increasing the risk of anxiety or depression. The finding is relevant as the amount of time teenagers devote to social networking sites has risen 62.5 percent since 2012 and continues to grow.
Amazingly, investigators estimate that teenagers were on social media sites for an average of 2.6 hours per day last year. Critics have claimed that more screen time is increasing depression and anxiety in teenagers.

Yoga incorporates breathing techniques, postural control, muscle strengthening, flexibility and cognitive control which can help promote self-control, attention, body awareness, and stress management. These are all skills that are beneficial for children with ADHD to practice.
