Take Crossroads back to school this fall!

September marks the start of back-to-school season and a perfect time to explore Revolutionary New Jersey. Crossroads of the American Revolution and our Heritage Partners offer a wealth of options for teachers, parents and homeschoolers who want to make the state's complex heritage come to life.
  • Plan a trip to the 18th century! Cooler weather and brightly colored foliage make the fall months a perfect time to visit our Heritage Partner sites. Visit our events page for chances to chat with reenactors, share harvest fun, learn a new (old) craft and more. With new events being added all the time, chances are good you'll find something you'll love just a short ride away.
  • Download our Kids Revolutionary Activity Guide. It's not just history! Our workbook uses puzzles and games to introduce New Jersey heritage to youngsters through their math and observation skills. Visit our website's resource pages to download the full guide or just a few pages.
  • Check out our field trip and homeschooling options. Many of our Heritage Partners also offer special programs for visiting school groups and homeschooling parents. Visit our website to learn more.
  • Watch for our new Revolutionary Neighbors! In just a few weeks, we'll be introducing a new group of 18th century New Jerseyans and their Revolutionary era stories. Be sure to check our website and Facebook page for more information.
We'd love to hear about your Revolutionary New Jersey adventures with your kids. Share your experiences - and your kids' reactions - with us at [email protected] .
Governor signs 250th legislation; next planning meeting September 20

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed legislation on August 17 to authorize creation of a public/private partnership to plan the state's commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States. Themed activities, programs and more will help raise awareness of New Jersey's critical role in the Revolutionary War, underscore the importance of history education to an engaged and informed electorate, and demonstrate the benefits of heritage tourism to the state's economy.

The New Jersey Historical Commission, Crossroads and members of New Jersey's history and heritage community have already taken first steps toward plans for the 250th, and you're invited to the next meeting, to take place Thursday, September 20th at 6 p.m. at the NJM Insurance Group offices in West Trenton. Dial in information is also available for those who would like to participate remotely. For participation information and to RSVP, please email [email protected] by September 17th.

Upcoming Heritage Partner workshop focuses on Colonial-era treats

Authentic 18th century treats, libations and embellishments are on the schedule for the next Art of Period Trades and Crafts workshop, scheduled for October 2 at East Jersey Old Town Village in Piscataway.

Participants in "A Taste of the Trades" will learn about taverns and drinking habits of the Revolutionary era, and have a chance to sample several popular drinks of the time period, including punches, a toddy, wines and a non-alcoholic cider. They'll also have a choice of workshops on Colonial sweets, beer brewing and 18th century jewelry. Presenters include Phil Dunning, Richard Wagner, Deborah Peterson and Taylor Shelby.

Much more information is available on our  registration page. Sign up soon; our workshops fill up quickly!

This program is co-sponsored by Crossroads and the Middlesex County Office of Arts and History, Division of Historic Sites and History Services.
Baronfest celebrates life and role of von Steuben

He literally wrote the book on training the Continental Army, and September 17 marks the 288th anniversary of his birth. Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben was the man who transformed a ragged army into a disciplined fighting force well suited to take on the British Army. In thanks, the State of New Jersey gave him a home along the Hackensack River which had been seized from a local Loyalist family.

On September 29, join the party as the Bergen County Historical Society presents Baronfest, a Celebration of Major General Baron von Steuben at his Jersey estate in River Edge. Visit the home presented to him by a grateful state, experience the booms as Mott's Artillery demonstrates in the meadow, hoist a craft beverage to von Steuben's contributions and more! Bring the kids for fun activities and games.  More information
