Dermatology Section: pioneering the field of ethnic skin since 1940
Upcoming Events
We are excited to share the news about the virtual NMA Derm meeting!
Wow, what a year (and we are not quite halfway through yet). I missed seeing you all at the AAD and certainly will miss seeing you in person this summer at the NMA. The NMA has adjusted and pivoted-- as we always have. The meeting will be virtual.
While we celebrate the 125th anniversary of the NMA, there are also pressing issues afflicting our community. NMA has a COVID-19 relief fund, recorded a webinar series on COVID-19 in the black community, called for comprehensive reforms in response to police brutality, advocated for racism to be a recognized as a public health issue, and more. We are blessed to be apart of an organization that has never given up on the goal of racial equity in the field of medicine.

This year will be exciting, especially for the dermatology section! I've selected dynamic speakers to bring cutting edge topics. For my hair gurus, lectures include introducing scalp micropigmentation into your practice. For the business savvy, we will teach you to start a practice (without a loan) and steps to purchasing -- instead of leasing -- your office space. Many of you are rising stars, so no need to learn lessons by yourselves: we have presentations on steps to run clinical trials in your office and how to gain speaking invitations. Finally, since the NMA meeting is the place to meet new people and reunite with old friends, the online happy hour will be a great way to connect! I am readjusting the schedule, but please save Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2 on your calendars. Expect to earn about 20 CME units , as always. I will send the full schedule once I finalize the logistics.

Finally, many of you have been inspired to get more involved and help---especially medical students! Now is the time as we will hold elections this year. The openings, as usually, are for secretary/treasurer, but NEW this year are student positions, so share this email with your mentees. Another way to help is to join one of the many AAD/A committees and represent the interests of black dermatologists and our patients. See below.

Miss you all terribly,

-- Chesahna Kindred, MD, MBA, FAAD

Call for nominations!
We are now accepting nominations for the executive board of the NMA Derm section. Feel free to nominate yourself. This is a year of uncertainty, so I got you. I will stay on board as chair at least another year or as long as the NMA derm section needs me. Positions:
  • Secretary/Treasurer
  • Student Co-chair
  • Student Co-Vice-chair
  • Student Co-Secretary
The students position is a great idea from our former chairs, Drs. Ginette Okoye and Valerie Callender. These are positions for medical and college students to work hand in hand with the e-board, provides a new opportunity since rotations, interships, externships, and fellowships have been cancelled, and widens the door for the younger generation.
Simply reply to this email with your nominations.
Want to make an impact within the AAD/A? Join a committee and represent the interests of black dermatologists and patients. Please respond with your bio attached and we will write your letter of recommendation.
