Has your Starbucks started offering pumpkin spice lattes yet? Maybe not quite yet, but soon . . . Autumn starts September 23rd!
Whether it's the foliage, the fashion, or the cool, crisp weather that gets you going, everybody has a soft spot for fall. It may not be the start of the calendar year, but it does seem to be the start of something entirely different as summer ends and schools get back into the grind. Between the new student registrations and first DRDP collections, don't forget to take some time to watch the leaves turn!

Don't miss these two series of workshops on the Protective Factors Framework! Each series starts off with an Introduction to Strengthening Families, and then delves into the five Protective Factors. Come to the evening sessions, or join the Saturday morning groups.

PROVIDER STORIES & HIGHLIGHTS
Lani Schiff-Ross, Executive Director of First 5 San Joaquin, recently toured two
Raising Quality!
Family Child Care Homes -
Diana's Day Care
and
Wonderland Day Care.
Diana's Day Care, located in Stockton, is owned by Diana Quiroga, who has operated her program since 2007. Diana enrolled in Race to the Top in 2014 and continued with
Raising Quality!,
and was one of the first to achieve Tier 5. Lani asked Diana what gets her excited and keeps her involved in child care; Diana declared, "The children light me up!" She's also proud of her program's strong preschool base, considering the children's performance in Kindergarten and first grade "a great success!" (See Diana's picture in the Partner Programs section below.)
Trini Serrano and José Chavez, owners of Wonderland Day Care in Stockton (pictured above left), also a Tier 5 program, welcomed Lani and showed her their extensive outdoor classroom, funded in part with
Raising Quality!
Quality Awards. Trini and José were active participants in Race to the Top and progressed to Tier 5 under
Raising Quality!.
Lani observed, "Visiting José and Trini and meeting their children, it's apparent they see this as a family mission to invest in children and families."
This husband/wife team achieved their Quality Growth Plan goal of advancing to a higher tier by implementing new tools and continuing their education to keep them "on the right track."
Lani reflected on the tour, saying, "It was an affirming time for me to know that First 5 San Joaquin's long term investment in promoting quality child development is a good investment. Seeing two of the four of our Tier 5 family child care providers left me with a strong sense of hope for our future generation, knowing the children are spending their days in high quality programs that will have a long term positive impact on their future." To Diana, Trini and José and all of our

providers, Congratulations, and thank you for your dedication to providing quality care and education.

Celebrating Grandparents:
There is a special bond that can only be shared between grandchildren and their grandparents.
Grandparents are full of hugs and kisses, family history, wisdom, patience, love, and guidance,
increasingly playing an important and often unrecognized role in the functioning of the modern family.
National Grandparents Day (September 9, 2018) gives grandchildren the opportunity to show love and appreciation to

and all the other wonderful grandparents in their lives.
Mandated Reporter Training
:
The goal of the Child Abuse Mandated Reporter Training Project is to have free training available for mandated child abuse reporters so they may carry out their responsibilities properly.
New training
will be launched this month with updated content.
