SIZEMORE WINS 1-HOUR, JESSE TAKES 4th LATE MODEL CHAMPIONSHIP
A frantic and exhilarating final few laps on August 25th capped off a great 2018 Brown’s Oil Service Late Model points pursuit. Fans at the Tom Wood Group Indianapolis Speedrome Powered by Lincoln Tech could not believe their eyes at the conclusion of the 60-minute Figure 8. We thank everyone on property for their patience and hard work to get the show in Saturday after a late afternoon dumping downpour from Mother Nature.

Mark Tunny topped the 21-car qualifying session with a time of 17.729 seconds on a partially compromised damp track. The 42nd Annual 1-Hour Figure 8 began with Mark snagging the lead over front row mate Ben Tunny. Lap 7 came a red flag when 4th Place Jeffrey Shackelford was clipped at the crossover damaging his rear axle tube. Red again on lap 17 as Tim Logue and Nick Moore connected at the intersection collecting Steve Durham. Mark resumed the lead on the restart. Lap 55 saw a partly fading Ben Tunny get turned around by unintentional contact from rookie Richie Arthur, both continued.

The halfway point had Mark, Chad Sizemore, Jesse Tunny, Mike Hadley Jr, and Ben as the top five all on the lead lap. But it was Mark showing dominance as he inched closer and closer to tail of that 4-Car fight for second place. This form continued for the next 27-minutes with Mark eventually catching this foursome. And finally, that’s when all hell broke loose.

With less than 1-minute remaining, Todd Shelby suffered mechanical woes forcing a spin directly in front of the top five runners. Cars piled in forcing a red flag with only 32-seconds remaining. Caught up in the wad were most notably Mark Tunny and Jesse Tunny who were dispatched to the tail of the restart for being stopped when the red flag flew. This put the race and championship up in the air. Chad bested the restart to lead the final 2 circuits and earn his biggest career victory. Ben Tunny was second. Jesse moved from 5th to 3rd on the final lap to win his 4th series title by a mere 12 points over Ben. Rounding out the top ten race finishers were Hadley, Mark Tunny, Mike Riddle Jr, rookie of the year Matt Smith, Durham, Quentin White, and Shelby.
