Church Workday this Saturday
Help us beautify our campus before we reopen on Sunday! Drop by for an hour. Kids too! Wear your mask.  Sustenance provided. Here are some jobs we will be doing:
  1. Weed work and flower placement on the graves.
  2. Our street sign can use some rust treatment
  3. Cleaning of altar candles
  4. Wash down posts around the door of Parish Hall (We won't have time to paint them this week.)
  5. Since the Parish Hall renovation is almost complete, we need to go through the tables and chairs and dump the ones in terrible shape (or give them away) before they are stored in our new closet.
Newsletter Continues
Friends, after last week’s note about sunsetting our newsletter, Sybil Nishioka stepped up and offered to keep it going for now.  Sybil is a member of Christ Memorial and also the Diocesan Communications Contractor. She oversees our website and is also helping to establish a Facebook presence for both the Church and the Thrift Shop. Thank you Sybil!
Morning Coffee with Pastor Gae
Aloha Friends,

In our Episcopal Church, education for ministry doesn’t end with seminary graduation. Clergy are expected to continue learning by taking classes or attending seminars. The church incentivizes us by providing a Continuing Ed allowance. I have always taken advantage of this.
I recently attended an on-line class through the Unity denomination. I have been intrigued by Unity because of my Swedish grandmother. While Ubba didn’t attend church she received their publication, The Daily Word. She read it faithfully every day and often I would find her meditating with her rolled up copy wrapped in a handkerchief.

Unity was founded by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1889. It grew out of the Transcendentalist movement of the 19th century and became known as New Thought Christianity. The essence of their belief is that every person is an expression of God and our thoughts have creative power. ( www.unity.org )
The class I just finished was called “The Twelve Powers”. Unity teaches that God has endowed every one of us with “divine powers” and if we keep our attention on them, it will lead to the life that God intends for us. I thought this teaching was very cool and so I thought I’d share it with you. I apologize if this recap does any disservice to their important teaching. I am certain there is much more to learn. So with that caveat, here’s a little sketch of how my Episcopal lens understands The Twelve Powers:

Faith - Everything is grounded in the power of faith. We are all beloved children of God but if we don’t have faith in that basic principle of who we are, then it doesn’t matter whether it is true or not. We are given the power to choose to have faith.

Strength – This power enables us to stay in the consciousness of Jesus, the Christ, even when we are in times of hardship.

Wisdom - This power gives us good judgment and the ability to know God, know ourselves, and understand how we are showing up in the world.

Love - Since we are created in the energy of God’s unconditional love, the power of love is imbedded within us. In other words, we can’t help but to love.

Power – We have power over our human condition and the way we show up in the human condition. While we don’t have power over some things that happen to us (like getting run over by a truck), we have power to remember that even in the worst of circumstances, we have power over how we think about it, remembering that God is always working for good.

Imagination - This power gives us the ability to imagine what we want in our life. Imagination comes before creativity. We imagine a Peaceable Kingdom, right? So let’s create it.

Understanding - This power helps us to discern as to what is spiritual or of God and how to use it so that it benefits not only our own life but the world.

Will - The Holy Spirit provides us with opportunities to practice and use the power of our will.

Order - This power calls us to embrace who we truly are – we are in the divine mind; we are an expression of God.

Zeal – I love this power! It is passion. It is what energizes us to live life fully.

Elimination - In my opinion, this is one of the top 3 powers on the journey. It gives us the ability to let go of any circumstance that has power over us that is not of God’s love. Mostly this power is about forgiveness.

Life - This power promises that if we stay anchored in the other 11 powers, we create a life that is abundant in God.

Unity believes that Jesus developed all these powers to their fullest and if we study the gospels we can see how he used them. We can develop them too because when God created us, God placed them within us.

As always, your thoughts, please.

Online Centering Prayer & Scripture Reflection
Tuesdays, 9:00 - 9:45 am (HST)
Join Zoom Meeting
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/7532197968

We will continue to have Centering Prayer every Tuesday morning on Zoom, 9:00 - 9:45 am. We begin with a scripture reading for the day followed by 12 minutes of meditation. Then a reflection is read and anyone who would like to share an insight is invited to do so. We finish with prayer time for those in need of healing.
Online Bible Study
Wednesdays, 2:00 - 3:15 pm (HST)
Gospel of John with Pastor Gae
We are currently studying what is known as the Gospel’s “Book of Glory”, Chapters 13 - 21. The Gospel of John was written sometime around the year 90 CE, nearly 60 years after Jesus walked the earth. The Christian community was well established. Each week, we study a passage and discuss the story, how it might have been heard by those first Christians, and what it says to us. If you’ve never studied the Bible, why not now? This isn’t a lecture. All you need is a bible, any translation, and the ability to get on Zoom. Email Pastor Gae gdchalker@gmail.com if you are interested in attending.
The Labyrinth - Meditation in Movement
Feeling a little overwhelmed with life right now? Try walking our labyrinth. There is not a right or wrong way to walk the Labyrinth. Simply observe the intuitions and desires that come as you walk. This is an embodied prayer experience. Let your body lead you! You can walk it slowly and reverently or quickly and playfully. If you are moved to pause at a given spot, do so!

Center yourself with a few deep breaths before entering the Labyrinth. Ask God to bless you as you begin your journey so that you become a channel of grace and blessing.
