Day 69: Cafe Latino

Destination: World Music Day

The music of Latin America is not one sound and it is hard to categorize. It is influenced by the great Aztec and Mayan cultures, the conquest by European powers and by the African slave trade and immigration through the Caribbean. Throw in just a smattering of North American Jazz and you have a satisfying sound that draws you in and holds you.

It has a variety of rhythms and yet they all retain a latin music sound that can travel from the barrios of Mexico City to the clubs of Buenos Aires.

I served for 6 years on the Board of Directors of Mattie Rhodes Center, a Latin American art and social service agency based on the Westside. It was a pleasure to work with them.
