Friends,

Have you heard the news? We have our sights set on a late September reopening! We couldn’t be more excited to reconnect with you all and resume in-person film screenings. We can practically taste the popcorn already!

The health and safety of our community remains our top priority, which is why we’ve decided not to reopen at the beginning of Phase III. Instead, we’ll use the time between now and the fall to ensure compliance with all safety standards and to implement some additional facilities changes. These updates to the Cinema, which you can read about in our official press release , are made possible thanks to a generous matching grant from the Mass Cultural Council and Mass Development.

We know many of you are eager to get back to the cinematic experience you know and love and we are so grateful for your enthusiasm. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we prepare for a safe and smooth reopening for all.

If you’d like to support the Cinema’s reopening, consider becoming a Member or renewing your Membership (and receive a free film pass redeemable once we reopen!). Or, make a tax-deductible donation to your favorite nonprofit, independent movie theater.
Thanks for all that you do to keep us going. It means the world to us.

Wishing you all the best,
Your friends at Amherst Cinema

Today, we're featuring three documentaries covering subjects as wide-ranging as pop music history, the U.S. food industry, and the nature of family and identity.
ECHO IN THE CANYON
dir. Andrew Slater, 2018
ECHO IN THE CANYON celebrates the explosion of popular music that came out of LA’s Laurel Canyon in the mid-60s as folk went electric and The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, and The Mamas and the Papas gave birth to the California Sound. It was a moment (1965 to 1967) when bands came to LA to emulate The Beatles and Laurel Canyon emerged as a hotbed of creativity and collaboration for a new generation of musicians who would soon put an indelible stamp on the history of American popular music.

Available for streaming on Netflix and Kanopy .
FOOD INC.
dir. Robert Kenner, 2008
Filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that's been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser ( Fast Food Nation ), Michael Pollan ( The Omnivore's Dilemma ) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield Farms' Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms' Joe Salatin, the film reveals how complicated and compromised the once simple process of growing crops and raising livestock to feed ourselves and our families has become.

THREE IDENTICAL STRANGERS
dir. Tim Wardle, 2018
Three strangers are reunited by astonishing coincidence after being born identical triplets, separated at birth, and adopted by three different families. Their jaw-dropping, feel-good story instantly becomes a global sensation complete with fame and celebrity, however, the fairy-tale reunion sets in motion a series of events that unearth an unimaginable secret a secret with radical repercussions for us all.
