PLN Completes 500 kV ACCC Conductor Upgrade in Indonesia

With the support of contractor PT Central Multi Elektrindo, PLN completed the quad-bundled 500 kV Suralaya - Balaraja ACCC conductor transmission line in West Java near Jakarta.

PLN selected ACCC® Amsterdam to replace ACSR Dove size conductor to increase the line's capacity. Stringing began on March 25th, 2018 and construction was completed on July 31st.  The 62 kilometer line was energized on August 5th following inspection by PLN.

ACCC conductor for both projects was provided by PT KMI. Dervaux provided nearly 250 splices and over 600 dead-end assemblies while PLP provided suspension clamps, spacer-dampers and other fittings.

The average span length between the metal lattice structures was approximately 480 meters with the longest span being 859 meters. Roads and buildings were protected by bamboo structures during the installation. Sections 2 to 5 were relatively flat, but section 1 was very steep and challenging with elevation changes of up to 159 meters in a single span.

OMAC Quad puller / tensioners, joint presses and 2 service winches were used mainly at the substations. All other equipment was manually operated. Access to all towers was on foot which meant a 2 hour walk when accessing some towers in section 1. All equipment, which included quad rollers and joint presses was physically carried to the towers, as were the fittings.

ACCC installation supervision was provided by PT PLN-E, PT. PLN JTBB, PT KMI Wire & Cable TbK, PT Dinamika Elektra Mandiri, and CTC Global's Master Installer, Mark Eglinton. To date, PLN has completed nearly 80 ACCC conductor installations.

A second 500 kV reconductor project is slated to begin in September following the Asian Games. For more information please visit our website www.ctcglobal.com

CTC Global Exhibits at EPRI's 1st Annual Electrification Conference in Long Beach, California

In a continued and collaborative effort to improve energy efficiency and reduce GHG emissions in residential, commercial, industrial, transportation and other sectors, EPRI's 1st Annual Electrification Conference and Exposition was a huge success attended by more than 1,800 industry experts.

While the exhibition hall showcased leading-edge technologies, the plenary and panel sessions discussed how electrification can help utilities and policy makers achieve some very substantial CO2 emission reduction initiatives. It was very clear that grid modernization will play a key role in reaching these objectives and that the use of highly efficient conductors such as ACCC conductor will be essential.

CTC Global was very pleased and proud to share our knowledge as to how the ACCC conductor can improve the efficiency, capacity, reliability and resilience of the world's electric power grid to help us all reach these very important goals and leverage the benefits of electrification in every sector. Please check out this great video

ACCC Conductor
Long Span Performance of ACCC Conductors

Initially deployed in 2005, the ACCC conductor has become the dominate technology for transmission and sub-transmission projects where efficiency, capacity, reliability and resiliency are paramount design objectives. The ACCC conductor's hybrid carbon fiber composite core also makes it ideally suited for long span applications for a number of important reasons.

The strength to weight ratio of the ACCC conductor composite core is approximately five to seven times greater than a steel core. For instance, typical steel used for bare overhead conductor core strands offers a tensile strength of ~200 ksi, while the high-strength version of steel offers 275 ksi. The standard ACCC composite core is rated at 313 ksi, while the high-strength version (known as ULS) is rated at 375 ksi. In either case, the weight of the ACCC composite core is ~70 percent less than steel. Furthermore, steel core strands are typically helically wound around a central core strand. Within the diameter of the overall steel core, approximately 25 percent of the area is void. The ACCC composite core consists of hundreds of thousands of structural fibers bound together with a high performance epoxy matrix without any voids. The lack of voids not only enhances core strength, it also prevents Aeolian Vibration from causing fretting fatigue, microfracture propagation and stress fatigue failure where the round strands typically rub against themselves, especially at higher tensions in areas prone to wind.

In the case of the ACCC conductor, the resistance to Aeolian Vibration is further improved by the fact that the ACCC conductor uses compact, trapezoidal shaped aluminum strands. Unlike conventional round wire strands used in most conductor types, the flat sided trapezoidal strands dissipate vibration over a much more substantial surface area compared to round wire conductor designs. The ability to dissipate vibration more efficiently is a highly sought attribute for conductors that are deployed on long spans where tension is much higher and where predominate winds at higher elevations above ground or water generate Aeolian Vibration.
The lighter weight and greater strength of the ACCC conductor can contribute significantly to reducing structural costs and tower height. Additionally, the ACCC conductor's composite core offers a very low coefficient of thermal expansion so, under heavy electrical loads, the core does not elongate causing additional conductor sag.
