For 15 years, the "Red Hat Ladies" have been meeting once a month for an extremely colorful lunch at a different restaurant somewhere in the Twin Cities. This month, they made their debut at Spring Cafe.
Yes, They're Allowed to Be There (Usually)
If somehow you haven't seen them already, dockless bicycles and electric scooters are showing up and zipping all over Como. They are part of new contracts the City Council approved this month.
The advantage to the dockless vehicles is that you can find them -- and leave them -- just about anywhere. But riders are not supposed to park them on sidewalks, at bus stops, or other places where they can be an obstacle. That isn't always happening. Nor are scooter riders always sticking to  streets, bike lanes, or bike paths.  Find out more about this new era of getting around.
12 Days of Fun and Games
District 10 has a handy "cheat sheet"  of what is allowed -- and isn't allowed -- in the neighborhood during the 12 days of the State Fair. The guide covers street parking, lawn parking, peddlers, and vendors; and includes phone numbers to call about different issues. Patience and persistence? That you're going to have to develop on your own. You can  find the guide , including a downloadable PDF and code citations, on District 10's website.
Rec Centers Launch Fall Activities
Registration is open for new and ongoing activities at North Dale and Northwest Como recreation centers for adults, youth, preschoolers, and families from now into winter.  There are both free and fee activities.
  • Adult activities range from basketball, soccer, pickle ball, and dancing to yoga, pilates, plumbing, and art (and wine) appreciation.
  • Youth activities include staples such as taekwondo and a variety of dance and art classes to field trips, engineering, creative writing, and baby-sitting training,
You can get a synopsis of activities, days, times, and fees from District 10's website. Or you can download PDFs of the more-detailed activities calendar for each center. While you're there, you can take a survey of what kind of activities you'd like to see in the future.
Watershed District Seeks Grant Ideas
The Capitol Region Watershed District is now accepting applications for Partner Grant proposals for projects that protect,  manage,  or improve  water resources in the watershed, which includes Como Lake, Loeb Lake, Trout Brook, and parts of the Mississippi River.  Grants can range from $1,000-$20,000. An informational workshop is scheduled for Tuesday Sept. 11 from 3-4:30 p.m. Final proposals are due by Friday Oct. 26.
Thinking Beyond Labor Day

Are We Up to the Challenge?

We Can Help with Your Party
District 10 has street barricades and portable recycling containers that community members can use for block parties, neighborhood, or family events.

The street barricades are required by the city when you block off your street or alley -- but ours are a more-affordable option than getting them from Public Works.  Barricades require a $50 deposit. We return $40 when you return the barricades.  Reservations are first-come, first-served. ( To borrow our barricades, you must have an event permit from the city.)

You can borrow the recycling containers for free; there are two kinds:
  • For cans, bottles and other items you can include in your weekly recycling.
  • For food scraps and other compostable organics.
To reserve any of this equipment, call our office at 651-644-3889, or send us an email.
Streetcar Station is Open Sundays
The exhibit space at the Como Park Streetcar Station is now open for the season every Sunday from noon-4 p.m. Stop in to learn a bit about the history of Como Park, pick up replacement organics recycling bags, or just share comments and suggestions with the District 10 board member on duty. The Streetcar Station is at the northeast corner of Lexington and Horton.
Spread the Word
District 10 is one of Saint Paul's 17 citizen participation districts. The District 10 Como Community Council is a nonprofit organization, governed by a Board of Directors who are elected by members of the community. The Council's mission is to inform, educate, and connect the neighborhood to increase community pride and confidence.
