REVISED TO INCLUDE HH SCHEDULE, Elul 5778 / Tishrei 2779
President's Message 5779  High Holiday  Edition

Dear Friends,

Last year, I wrote about telling my mom that I love our little shul. This year has proven that out even more. I am thankful for long-time and new members, for volunteers, board members, and those who come to worship and study. I relish the kindness we show each other through the chesed in acts of visiting the sick, celebrating with brides and grooms, feeding and clothing the poor, and comforting the bereaved. I see kindness in how we cheer each other's accomplishments, protect each other's vulnerabilities, and behave with deep respect for each other despite (sometimes strongly) differing points of view. "If there is no Torah, there is no derekh eretz (civility); if there is no derekh eretz there is no Torah," Rabbi Elazar the son of Azaria would say. We are blessed with both: Torah and derekh eretz. The Nassau Synagogue is more than a historic farmers' shul, it's a mensches' shul.

To our delight, Derek Fields and Rebecca Glass return to lead High Holiday services this year. Volunteers will be taking many ritual and leadership roles as well, making this a truly meaningful "community" service. Remember that no membership or tickets are required to attend any service -- please come, and bring loved ones and friends with you.

The shul has achieved so much this past year. Repairs on and improvements to the building, fresh opportunities to study and gather, and plans toward an amazing concert, on October 21st, to support building rehabilitation. Member leaders step up to the bima weekly, bringing knowledge and musicality to our Shabbat services. Torah study, too, has been made vibrant through a great diversity of views. Our tradition of scrumptious weekly Kiddush meals has been upheld by a rotating committee that buys the freshest goods and blesses us with their favorite recipes. There are so many ways to volunteer: come add your special touch!

L'shanah tova tekatevu v'techatemu . May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year.

B'shalom,
Pam Tatar

Ezekiel'sWheels Klezmer Band

COME ONE, COME ALL,
TO OUR BIGGEST EVENT OF THE YEAR!

Ezekiel's Wheels Klezmer Band

You can now buy tickets to hear internationally-acclaimed Ezekiel's Wheels Klezmer Band on Sunday, October 21 at 2 PM at Jupiter Hall, Lucky Strike Social, in Crossgates Mall, Albany

These five excellent musicians bring passion, virtuosity, and contagious energy to every performance. The Wheels improvise with the intimacy of chamber music and the intensity of a rowdy dance band. Their engaging contemporary interpretation of Jewish music is irresistible to audiences ranging from elementary school students to the judges at the International Jewish Music Festival, who heralded them as "a true musical democracy."

They have performed at the Kennedy Center, the Shalin Liu Performance Center, and Yidstock. Their repertoire incorporates original as well as traditional instrumental tunes, and in 2017, it further expanded to include songs in Yiddish and English.

Check them out at ewklezmer.com.

This is a fundraiser for our synagogue, whose historic building is in need of improvements.  Be sure to come support our shul and enjoy this unique experience!

Tickets are only $25 for adults and $ 20 for seniors/students/active military . Group sales, 10 tickets or more purchased together, are $18 each

BUILDING COMMITTE E REPORT

By Michael Roland

As you'll see whenever you're at the shul, various improvement projects are underway.

Exterior painting is almost complete.
The ramp will be stained as soon as weather permits.
A new metal railing bordering the front walkway has been installed.
Finishing touches will include decorative stone edging and replanting on the slope.

Additional projects this season include widening the upper driveway to assist access to the rear walkway and ramp, adding new landscape plantings in front, sorting our library, and adding to our bookshelves.

All this work is expensive, so if you are able, please help with an additional contribution to the synagogue.

Book Club News:
New Year, New Direction

by Bruce Huttner

Last year, the Nassau Synagogue Jewish Philosophy Book dove into Buddhism, ending with an interesting book by a local Rabbi that explored how he uses Buddhist ideas of "mindfulness" and "selflessness" in his daily religious practice. Study of Buddhist thought brought us back to our core beliefs as Jews, demonstrating how we are at our best when we engage socially and intellectually with the larger society in which we live.

While we have not chosen our next book, I believe that we will take up questions regarding the place of religion in the modern world. What does modern science have to teach us about faith? The broad integration of modern science into our cultural worldview is, perhaps, the most defining feature of modernity. From study of the cosmos, to research into the sub-atomic realm, science has turned its tools and methods to every level of human thought and activity. In the process, it challenges entrenched religious dogma; forcing religions to re-examine fundamental tenets. How does one accept embrace science while embracing religious faith? Can the two be meaningfully reconciled?

The questions run deep, and we've grappled with them before. This time, we'll focus our investigation more sharply. Wherever we begin, wherever we land, I guarantee that it will be engaging.

Join us. We'll start the Monday following Yom Kippur at 7:30 PM, at the shul.

Mishnah Study Group

October 6th
November 3rd
December 1st
January 5th

On the first Shabbat of each month, all are invited to study Mishnah for up to an hour following Kiddush.

D rop in or become a regular; either is most welcome, as no preparation is required. Study style resembles how we study the weekly Torah portion.

The Mishnah, a compilation of concise legal debates, was drawn together by Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi (Judah the Prince) in 200 CE. It's the foundation upon which the Talmuds (Babylonian and Palestinian) are built, and is conceptually accessible.

Membership / Donation Form

The Nassau Synagogue tradition is that one need not be a member to attend Shabbat services or to participate in our events and programs.  We do not sell seats for the High Holidays, nor do we auction aliyot. How have we been able to do this over the years and still keep membership dues so very low?  It is through your continued support that is essential to keeping us strong.  The Nassau Synagogue relies almost exclusively on the contributions of its supporters and on our membership dues.  So please, help us with a donation, and/or consider becoming a member.

A Special Request

In our last newsletter, the board asked for donations to offset the cost of painting and insulating our building. The shul's exterior had been deteriorating, and inadequate insulation had been resulting in high heating costs.

We are pleased and grateful to say that we have already received a number of donations earmarked for this work. They have ranged from $10 to $1,000.

Like Planet Fitness, we are a "no judgment zone." Any amount you can give will be very much appreciated. Remember, your donations are always tax deductible.

Thank you!

...and "shehecheyanu," to Rhonda Rosenheck for her first public poetry reading, at the historic Caffe Lena.

We pray for all who are in need of healing, including:

Rose Ann Roth,
Maya Layton,
Justin Tatar, and
Bruce Huttner

Please send names of those needing healing to Pamela Tatar at p amelatatar @gmail.com.

Editor's note: In Jewish tradition healing can mean many things; it is possible even with lasting ailments.
