UPDATE ON DESIGN PLANS FROM THE PROJECT TEAM

Greetings from the Richmond Highway Corridor Improvements team at VDOT! We are currently working to finalize major project design features, incorporating feedback from the public information meetings held last year and earlier this year. The most recent developments include plans to move forward with traditional intersection designs at the intersections of Sacramento Drive/Cooper Road and Buckman Road/Mount Vernon Highway. The final design plans will be presented for public comment at a public hearing early next year.

Here's a look at some of the intersection improvements planned:

DESIGNING TO IMPROVE SAFETY FOR ALL USERS
The Richmond Highway Corridor Improvements project will provide more travel options for everyone. In addition to making improvements for drivers and transit users, project designers are working to make the corridor safer, more accessible and more convenient for bicyclists and pedestrians.

For bicyclists and pedestrians, both sides of the street will feature separate bicycle paths and sidewalks. To keep everyone safe, the paths will be protected from motorists by a grass strip.

When crossing the street, pedestrians will find frequent and well-marked crossings along the corridor. All intersections with traffic signals will feature ADA-compliant crosswalks as well as countdown timers to show how much time is left until the light changes.

When the project is complete, the almost three-mile stretch of Richmond Highway between Jeff Todd Way and Napper Road will be significantly more bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly.
ADDITIONAL PROJECT FUNDING

The Richmond Highway project recently received $127 million from the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA), allowing the project team to move forward with finalizing design plans as well as the right of way acquisition phase of the project.
