The Good Neighbor Project is a series of events and initiatives designed to help us positively impact our community. Between February and May 2018, Appalachian Regional Library's Good Neighbor Project will focus on managing and maintaining mental health. Libraries throughout the region will host events, partner with local organizations, purchase books, and showcase local resources that focus on improving mental health. Kevin Hines, a professional mental health speaker and author of Cracked, Not Broken: Surviving and Thriving After a Suicide Attempt, will speak at Ashe County High School on April 18 at 7 pm. Here are some events to look for in February:
Classical Music & Coloring for Calmness
Wednesday, February 7 and 21, 11 am
Storytime: Focus on Feelings
Thursdays in February at 10:30 am
To enter our first annual regional Top Ten Checkouts Contest, guess the order of these top ten checkouts of 2017. Visit the circulation desk to fill out an entry card, or send your guesses to [email protected]. The winner will receive a copy of their choice from the top ten AND get to choose the next book the library purchases (and have first dibs on it)!
A snowball in the face is surely the perfect beginning to a lasting   friendship.

catalog-migration
Beginning on February 19, many NC Cardinal patron services will be unavailable as NC Cardinal (our library catalog) prepares to migrate their server. Ask your friendly librarians for more information. We hope this will be a smooth transition, and when it is over, we'll have a more reliable, more robust catalog!
February 19-March 5
day-in-the-district
Each year the library hosts a Day in the District so that our patrons can meet their representatives and so our representatives can see how the library is serving the community in new ways. This year, join us for a complementary hot chocolate bar on the Upper Level and let your representatives know how much you love your library!
Saturday, February 24, 9-11 am
Our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program put over half a million dollars back into the pockets of Ashe County residents last year. This vital service is hosted by the library and performed by IRS-certified volunteers between January and April of each year. If you would like a volunteer to prepare your taxes this year, give us a call at 336.977.5829. Most people who earn $54,000 or less are eligible to receive free tax preparation through the VITA program. Ashe Services for Aging is also hosting the VITA program this year. To schedule an appointment at the Senior Center, call 336.246.4347. For more details about the VITA program, visit the IRS website.
