Sermon
"The Community of Christ: My Family's Story"
Scripture
Ephesians 4:1-6

This Sunday
This Sunday we begin in earnest our focus on what it means to be a church filled with love, acceptance, and forgiveness.  We 're seeking to be a place of belonging; being brought in to the family of God as all we do is centered in actions and attitudes that accurately reflect the love and acceptance of Jesus.  It sounds so easy.  It's not.  It wasn't for Jesus and it isn't for us.   The Old Testament spends a great deal of time talking about the chosen people; of the rules for that gathered community, the consequences when laws are broken, and the stories of a God who seemed distant, illusive and judgmental.  Then came Jesus, the first in human history to be fully filled with God's Spirit; a spirit of love and transformation.  The God described by Jesus was not illusive but as close as our breath.  The God of Jesus sought to accept anyone and everyone.  This God sought to bring beauty, love, healing and hope.  Those who were confronted were those who sought to bring hopelessness and oppression, abuse and rejection.  Jesus confronted those, but others he loved, healed, touched, fed and then expanded the whole idea of community.  He included friends and enemies, the poor and the sick, the stranger and friend.  As we begin this journey together, seeking to do the same, we need to understand that it took Jesus three years to make the needed changes.  It may take us the same amount of time.  It begins today.  This Sunday I'll spend some time talking about my own family, the stands taken by my parents and even my siblings.  I'll talk about the places of acceptance and the places of rejection.  I'll talk about the way the culture of our family changed.  I'll talk a bit about my own experiences in the church.  To prepare please read Ephesians 4:1 - 6.

MINISTRY NEWS
September 9  Worship @ 9 :00am and 11:00
On  September 9, we begin our fall worship series, Jesus and the Extended Community. Pastor Brad will preach and will share stories from his own family. Plan to be there to begin this fall and the exploration of a Christ Centered Community together. Between services this week there will be a fellowship time for all ages.
September 16  Worship @ 9 :00am and 11:00
The second week of the fall sermon series will bring an opportunity to share some our own stories of extending the community in the church and in our families. It will be a time to enter into the conversation about a Christ-Centered Community in our context. It will also be a time when we have the chance to consider committing to live by a covenant during this season where we would:
1. stay curious
2. be kind
3. listen with the same amount of passion
with which we hope to be heard.
Plan to be part of the conversation during worship. Between services, Sunday School begins this week with classes for all ages.
Sunday School - Coming Soon
On September16 we will kick-off a new season of Sunday school. We will be use the curriculum called "Dig In" as the kids are in their second year of walking through the Bible from Genesis to Revelations. Kids' Club will continue to be offered at both services and the children will flow from Kids' Club into both Music Time and then Sunday school. There will be three Sunday school classes broken up by age.  Contact is Jen Hoerber.

If you or your group would like to host a dinner, please sign up on the bulletin board across from the office.
  • Kids' Club  is a fellowship time for kids during the Sunday morning worship services. For first service it typically runs from 9:10-9:45am and for second service it is from 11:15am -12 noon. Kids' Club can consist of all types of activities-art projects, stories, games, and much more. Please consider hosting a Kid's Club and sharing your talents, passion and stories with our children. If you want to host a Kid's Club, but you just aren't sure of what to do, talk with Jen Hoerber as she has some activities all ready to go. You can sign up for only one service or for both, or for just one Sunday or several. Every bit helps!

Pastor's Study - Community According to Jesus
Wednesday, September 19
Starting Wednesday, September 19, Pastor Brad will teach a class that will focus on Jesus, and his views, teachings and actions centered on what it means to be community. We'll examine who is welcome, who belongs, and how Jesus identified each. Jesus changed the whole idea of community, but why and how? To begin we'll examine some of the specific pieces of the Old Testament and the Laws around what constitutes, defines, effects, kills and upholds community. From there we'll begin to examine Jesus as we spend some time in the four gospels. Then we'll take a look at Paul and examine the influence of Jesus on Paul; how Paul viewed and built community, take a look at 15 "One Another" verses, and what they might mean for us.   Click here for more information
