Travel safely: Schools reopen Aug. 27
Students and teachers aren't the only ones who need to be prepared for the first day of school on Monday, Aug. 27. While it's always important for motorists to be prepared to slow down and pay attention, it's particularly important during before- and after-school hours.
The National Safety Council back-to-school safety tips include:
  • School zones, which are in effect when children are present, should not exceed 20 mph.
  • Be aware of school buses. In addition to stopping when lights are flashing and/or the stop arm is extended, motorists should stop far enough so children have enough space to enter and exit safely.
  • Watch out for bicycles coming from driveways or behind parked cars, especially in school zones.
  • Be extra vigilant in school zones, near playgrounds, parks and residential areas.
  • Educate children about pedestrian safety. Practice walking routes to school with young students.
