Communications Changes Reboot
We've been listening to your feedback on how we communicate with you. You told us that you find the Lab Walk long, repetitive and, as a result, you either flip through it or rapidly scroll through it on your smartphone. After some consideration, we've decided to move to more frequent, but shorter communications to you. Here's what we're moving to (and, of course, we're open to feedback on this new approach):
1. One monthly newsletter, think magazine as opposed to weekly newspaper. We'll include imagery, features, focus on our parishioners, the state and national church. The first monthly newsletter will be emailed on Sept 5, paper copies will be available in the lobby.
2. We'll move to a short daily email, "Wake up with St. Peter's" that will have one-two pieces of information about upcoming events, sermons, etc. Focus will be on events and key themes (stewardship, for example).
3. That same content will be repurposed into one-two daily facebook posts. Posts will be short, informative, include imagery. While there is some duplication with the email, we recognize that some people like FB, some people like email. Our email will have an 'unsubscribe' option for those who use Facebook.
4. Text messages will go out the day of an event.
5. A video monitor will be installed in the lobby. This will be used for upcoming events, announcements, information. Video slide shows can also be used to highlight recent events

Ch-Ch-Changes
Some things are changing with our staff here at St. Peter's. Our extra-talented organist and music director,
Patty Oeste is taking a well-deserved sabbatical. She and Wolfe will spend the month of September and part of October trekking the Pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela in France and Spain. She promises to send photos and updates.
Mike King, our bookkeeper and long-time St. Peter's member, is finally retiring. Mike has worked tirelessly and has been invaluable in getting the church finances in proper order. He will be missed, but we're looking forward to seeing his smiling face in the choir on Sunday mornings. Mike plans on 'doing some stuff around the house' which might be code for tinkering with his beloved automobiles. Please give Mike a warm thank you when you see him.

Stewardship Report
We have started tracking our weekly giving versus what it takes to keep St. Peter's running. Each week you will see how the past weeks have fared. For July, we started off very strong, but have seen a decline in recent weeks. This is not uncommon in the summer months, but is something we need to pay attention to. Please help us keep St. Peter's going...and growing. And thanks for your support!

When pain is real, why is God silent?
Frederick Buechner has grappled with the nature of pain, grief, and grace ever since his father committed suicide when Buechner was a young boy. He continued that search as a father when his daughter struggled with anorexia. Frederick Buechner finds that the God who might seem so silent is ever near. Buechner says that loss will come to all of us, but he writes that we are not alone. Crazy and unreal as it may sometimes seem, God's holy, healing grace is always present and available if we are still enough to receive it.
Please come and explore this meaningful book by one of today's outstanding theologians with the Brown Bag Book Club. We will begin discussion on Wednesday, August 29, at noon, in the library. If you need a book, contact Linda Brown, Deacon, at [email protected].

FREE Tables!
St. Peter's has 6 large folding tables available for FREE! That's right! They are requiring either slight repair to the metal frame or legs, or the top replaced. With a little elbow grease and you can have a great extra table for the holidays or a craft table for rainy days. There is one catch; you must pick up by the end of the business day this Friday. After that, they will be hauled off. If you are interested, call the church office at 329-8174. Be the first to call and receive a customized set of St. Peter's note cards featuring Mike King in a coconut bra! (Just joking, but you can 't blame us for trying!)
|
Altar Flowers
There are still several open dates for altar flowers in Sept., Oct., and Nov.
The sign up sheet is on the bulletin board by the restrooms. You may also call the church office to sign up. A member of the Altar Guild will contact you regarding the size of arrangement you would like to purchase. Also, please keep in mind, that it is customary to leave the arrangement at the church so that they flowers can be given to shut-ins and those that are ill.

Eucharistic Visitors Needed
Eucharistic Visitors (EVs) are licensed lay persons who take Holy Communion, following the Eucharist, to those who are either sick or shut-in. Not only is this a rewarding experience for the EV but provides an invaluable service to those who because of illness or an inability to leave home, are still given the opportunity to share this Sacrament with their church family.
While St. Peter's does NOT have many members who require this benefit on an on-going basis, our current number of EV's has dwindled and we desperately need more people to participate. If we secure a bigger group of Eucharistic Visitors, they would go no more than once a month, allowing them to fully participate in the other Sunday programs.
I firmly believe that when you share the sacrament of Holy Communion with our homebound community, you are truly on sacred ground.

This week's Food Pantry Need
2 cans tuna/water; 2 pkg pasta; 2 cans pasta sauce
Pantry Musings
Immigration is a contentious political issue in our country today. The borders between Canada and Mexico and the United States have always been open in my lifetime. When you are stopped by the border patrol, especially between Mexico and the United States, it is normally to check the nature of your cargo and how much you have spent. Now more frequent stops are made and searches are targeted and people are questioned. Laborers, especially in California, come across for the day or for a season. Many follow the crops and farmers are dependent on this labor source. There is a mutual economic dependence in southern California and Mexico that has been present for years. Now that dependence has extended to many locations in the US, not just a seasonal, migrant labor but as labor that we traditionally will not do. Chicken catchers, for instance, in a Tyson plant are primarily all from Mexico. They are paid low wages and their living conditions are crude. Their presence in our workforce means that crops are picked and packed and shipped out to the rest of us. It also means that the prices of some goods are lower and that we are able to purchase chicken. There are more low level positions of employment. Maids, day laborers, babysitters, you figure some of the positions that pay little, require hard heavy work, yard work, snow removal, window washing. Immigrants tend to take whatever job that is available. We resist their presence. We think that it is important to build a wall to keep people out. Why? Is it because they are taking your jobs? Are you going to work at Tyson's catching chickens? You might last a day! Maybe a week. Tyson needs someone more dependable. Or is it because they are different? Different body build, different skin and hair, different language, different food, different ideas, different ways of having fun, different dress. In some cases they have fled terror and abject poverty, carried an infant and kept track of a young child or two as well. They come from South America across Mexico, they may come on foot, some are smuggled in trucks with no air circulation, some make it here, some die trying. Only to be met at the border by immigration officials to be separated from their children and be deported. Where are we, Christians? Does difference really matter? We act as though difference is a matter of life and death. The people who risked everything, finally arrive to knock on our door, and we treat them like an enemy. Love your neighbor as you love yourself. -
Ann
