This Week at St Timothy's
Episcopal Church
August 22, 2018

Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Prayer for St Timothy's
Lord Jesus Christ,
who hast built thy Church
upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets:
mercifully grant that building upon thee, the chief
cornerstone, with beauty and substance,
we may raise here at St Timothy's a
faithful people and a holy temple to thy glory.
May we and generations yet to come learn to praise thee
more and more in spirit and in truth.
Amen.
Routine, Discipline, Habit
When I started my doctoral program I was told in a seminar that a high percentage of priests will leave their church after they receive their doctorate. At first I assumed it was because the additional degree would make the priest an attractive candidate for other churches. While this may be so, it is not the reason found in the research. A high percentage of priests leave the churches because they grew frustrated after leaving the routine of academia. There is something satisfying, the instructor said, about being in school. You know up front what the deadlines are. You know how you are to be graded. You even learn how to maneuver with individual teachers to give them what they want which, in turn, gives you what you want. It is structured and dependable. When you leave that environment and return solely to the vicissitudes of parish life, it can literally be depressing.

It’s been three years since I’ve earned my doctorate and I happy to not be a statistic and even more happy to be at St Timothy’s, but I completely understand why some leave. Routine is stabilizing. Discipline attacks anxiety. As school returns next week, both parents and students are looking forward to a renewed routine (albeit some more than others!). Bedtimes, wake-up calls, lunch boxes made, book-bags packed, classes scheduled, it’s all there. As human beings, we naturally resist order and discipline while at the same time, we crave and need it.

As Winston-Salem culture begins to orient itself around the new school year, use this as an opportunity to make Sunday morning a part of your rhythm of life. Put it on the calendar. Schedule around it. Keep it holy. Like all disciplines, it will be difficult at first and you might even resent the obligation. But the more it becomes a part of our life, the more it becomes our life. If you need some help, start with this:

  • If you have children, let your children know before Sunday morning that Sunday is church day. Your consistency will show them it’s important. Children and youth, like all people test boundaries to see if they are important. If church is not a boundary worth keeping, then it must not be worth going.
  • Set your alarm earlier than you think you should. Nap in the afternoon.
  • Read the Gospel before you leave the house. Sunday’s readings are included in this email.
  • If you watch or read the news, do so with the intent on bringing the concerns of the world to your prayers at the altar.

See you Sunday.

Sunday's Lessons (n.b., we follow Track 2)

Preacher: Fr Steve Rice
Celebrant: Fr DJ Griffin

No Mass this Saturday
Please note that there will not be any services this Saturday, August 25.
We will be blessing our students, teachers, and administrators as they begin a new school year Sunday, August 26th, during the 9:00 and 11:00 Masses. We will help them mark another new start with a smart St. Timothy’s tag they can put on their backpack, briefcase, or messenger bag, to remind them that God is always with them and our prayers are following them. If you are a student, teacher, or an administrator (public, private, or Sunday school), make sure you come to Mass that day to get your blessing and tag.
Homilies
From the Choir Loft | Christin Barnhardt
This Sunday we will say farewell and Godspeed to Dr Mark Ardrey-Graves, who has accepted the call to St Paul's Episcopal Church as full-time Director of Music for Children and Youth. While we are sad to see Mark go, we are grateful for the year of leadership he has shared with us, and we are excited for him and the opportunities that lie ahead of him. See notes from Mark and me at the end of this email.

Mark's voluntary this Sunday Ich ruf zu dir, Johann Sebastian Bach, is the tune for Sunday's Gradual Hymn 634 "I call on thee, Lord Jesus Christ." Use the voluntary before mass begins as a time to prayerfully prepare for worship, and consider reading the text of Hymn 634 as you listen to the voluntary.

The Parish Choir (9am choir) and Schola Choir (11am choir) will resume weekly midweek rehearsals on September 4. This fall we will rehearse on Tuesdays from 6-8pm. Join us! Contact me for more information. And if any of your children or grandchildren are interested in joining choir this year, please don't hesitate to ask me for details.

Voluntaries:
Ich ruf zu dir, Johann Sebastian Bach
Fugue in C Major, BWV 953, Johann Sebastian Bach

Hymns:
Sing praise to God who reigns above, No. 408
I call on thee, Lord Jesus Christ, No. 634
Here, O my Lord, No. 318
All who love and serve your city, No. 571
How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, No. 636

Anthem:

See you Sunday,
Christin
The Parish Prayer List
Every single day we pray for those on our parish prayer list. You are welcome to add names each Sunday to the list in the narthex or you may do so online by clicking here. Please note this list is not a request for pastoral care. To speak to a member of the clergy and/or request counseling, visits, and/or a sacrament, please call or email Fr Steve Rice or Fr DJ Griffin directly.
Devotional Sponsorships
Altar Flowers
Our altars in the Church and Chapel are adorned weekly with flowers beautifully arranged by St. Timothy’s Flower Guild. Frequently the flowers are given in honor and/or memory of loved ones. The suggested donation to sponsor the flowers is $60. Is there a date coming up when you would like to honor someone or remember someone with a flower dedication? If so, please contact Ellen Turner at ellen@sttimothys.ws.
Also, are you interested in assisting the Flower Guild in arranging the flowers? If so, please contact Lea Thullbery at lea@sttimothys.ws.

Back to School Blessings| Fr DJ Griffin
It’s hard to believe that summer is already wrapping up and a new school year is beginning. It’s funny when you think about how much our lives revolve around school. Everything gets planned around the school year. Kids in grade school spend a majority of their waking hours, not with their families, but at school. So much of who we are as people gets formed during our school years. It’s hard to underestimate the significance of school in our individual and larger cultural experience.

Given its impact, it’s only fitting that we mark the beginning of the school year, not just as citizens, but as Christians. Blessings for seed-time and harvest have long been a part of Christian public worship. While most of us are no longer tied to the agricultural cycle, it’s a good example of the fact that the Church not only observes sacred time, but also blesses ordinary time.

On the one hand, this shows that the whole of our lives matters to God, not just what we do in church. On the other hand, it shows that, in the end, all times and seasons belong to God, who is sovereign over all things. There is nothing in our lives – whether it be church, or school, or work, or relationships – that is irrelevant to God. By blessing our students, teachers, and administrators, we not only invoke God’s power and presence on them for the year to come, but also offer the school year and everything to come it brings to him.

The tags that we give to those we bless will be visible and tangible reminders, throughout the year, of the fact that God is with them at all times, easy and difficult, good and bad; that there’s nothing that can separate them from his love (Romans 8:39); and to carry out their daily lives in a way that gives glory to him.
Christian Apologetics Starting September 5
Have you ever been challenged about the Christian Faith and had no idea how to respond? Starting in September, adult formation on Wednesday nights will focus on Christian Apologetics - making a defense of the Christian faith. We will look at all the common objections and discover the natural, philosophical, and theological truths to answer the critics. This is an important course to learn more about our faith and how to intelligently and faithfully share it.

As the summer closes, we are delighted to open our new Atrium for children ages 3 through 3rd grade. The former PreK Nursery (C-2) has been transformed into a space for our children and adults alike to grow in God's love. We will host three orientations for families to get a sneak peek of the new space and learn the methodology behind this beautiful work. Children will begin in C-3 (former Godly Play space) and parents will begin in C-4 (former Atrium) and come together in the new Atrium by the conclusion of the gathering.

Orientations will take place immediately following the 9am service this Sunday (8/26) and next Sunday (9/2) and last for about 45 minutes. We will also host an evening orientation on Sunday 9/9 from 6-7pm. We highly encourage parents and children to attend one gathering and ask that you take a moment to register your children for our programming offered this year using this form.
You may also email or call Emily Ball at emilynball@gmail.com or (704) 996-5762 with questions or to reserve a spot.
Our Common Life
Welcome to St Timothy's | New Members
Nick and Susan McLean
We have enjoyed attending St Timothy’s since we moved to Winston-Salem in 2012 and are excited to officially join the Parrish family. Nick is a physician partner with Nephrology Associates and Susan is an Exercise Specialist in Cardiac Rehab at Davie Medical. We enjoy hiking, listening to local music, and spending time with friends. We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our first child, due October 2nd!
Bill Ward
I am thrilled to be worshipping here at St. Timothy’s . I moved to Winston-Salem in 2003 with my wife who is the vocal coach for the Fletcher Opera Institute at UNCSA. I teach elementary music in the WSFCS system. I was tenor soloist and section leader in a large church in MA before moving to NC. The music at St. Timothy‘s is very inspirational as is the 11:00 Mass. I look forward to meeting as many parishioners as possible.
Welcome Luke Klingstedt
WFU Divinity Intern
Hello, St. Timothy's! My name is Luke Klingstedt, and I am currently in my second-year at Wake Forest University School of Divinity, pursuing an MDiv degree. I was confirmed in the Episcopal Church three years ago, and I married my wife, Chloe, this past May. I grew up in Carrollton, Texas and attended the University of Oklahoma. I am excited to join the community of St. Timothy's as I learn from Fr. Steve and Fr. DJ while I discern what my future will look like. I hope to participate in a multitude of services, so hopefully I will get a chance to meet each and every one of you at some point! Thank you for welcoming me!

N.B., Luke will begin his time at St Timothy's on August 26.
Godspeed Dr. Mark Ardrey-Graves
Congratulations and God-speed, Mark! Our wonderful organist Dr. Mark Ardrey-Graves has accepted a full-time job as Director of Music for Children and Youth at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Dr. Mark has led our liturgies from the organ bench beautifully and thoughtfully for the past year, and our loss will be St. Paul's gain. While we are sad to see him go, we are happy for him, wish him all the best, and look forward to future collaborations with St. Timothy's and St. Paul's choristers. Mark's last Sunday at St Timothy's will be August 26, so make sure you take the opportunity to thank him for sharing his talents and spirit with us.
Raymond Hawkins will play the organ Labor Day weekend, and Robert Matthews will serve as interim organist. ~ Christin Barnhardt

From Mark:
It is with truly mixed emotions, and no small amount of surprise, that I find myself sharing the news that, after a period of prayer, discernment, and conversation, I have accepted a call to serve as Director of Music for Children and Youth at St. Paul’s Church here in Winston-Salem. I will therefore be bringing my tenure as organist at St. Timothy’s to a close at the end of August in order to begin work at St. Paul’s, in time for the start of the new program year. I am excited for the opportunities that this new full-time venture will provide me in shaping the liturgical and musical formation of young Episcopalians, even as I am sad that this necessitates my saying farewell to the worshipping family of St. Timothy’s.
Although my time with you has been lamentably and unexpectedly brief, I cherish the relationships that have been built and the opportunities I have had to worship with you from the organ console. Saying farewell is never easy, but it is my hope that the upcoming two weeks will provide the opportunity for us to celebrate our time together. I am incredibly thankful for having had the privilege to work alongside such a talented and dedicated church staff, and the prayerfulness and rich worship life of the St. Timothy’s community is a treasure that I will long carry with me.
With all my warmest wishes, and in Christ’s love,
Mark

Welcome Ministry | Becky Johnston
The Welcome Ministry would love your help! We are looking to recruit new volunteers to help us on Sunday mornings. Specifically, we need new Ushers and Greeters.

Ushers: distribute worship bulletins, help collect the offering, assist with the flow of communion, get an attendance count, and help identify visitors.

Greeters: help newcomers in any way needed, direct guests with children to the appropriate classrooms, make sure welcome desk is stocked with guest bags and distribute those as needed, introduce visitors to staff, assist ushers as needed.

We would love to hear from you if these are areas where you’d like to serve! Find us in the narthex after the service- or email becky@sttimothys.ws if you are interested.

Stewardship & Giving
Why do we report giving and attendance?

Following Jesus Christ is about faith and not figures. However, figures do shed some light on how we are living out our faith. There are many places in the Gospel where Jesus makes the connection between one's spiritual health and their relationship with monetary wealth. Generosity is a gift of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5.22). By reporting the giving, we shed light on the practicalities of supporting ministry and mission and these numbers remind us of our responsibility in generously giving to the spread of God's kingdom. The same is true with attendance. We have to be present to receive the Sacraments. Our priorities are best demonstrated by our bodies. If we want to see what matters the most to a person - we look at where their spend and where they stand.

Give by Text - 336-697-6543
This is amazing. I never have cash or a check, but I always have my phone. You can now give to the work of St Timothy's just by texting. Here's how it works:

1. Text an amount to 336-697-6543
2. You will be sent a link to set up your debit/credit card (take a few seconds)
3. Once complete, your transaction will go through and you number will always be associated with the card.

Plus, you can text "Funds" to see a specific fund. If you want to sponsor a lamp, you can text "25 st timothys" and it will go the St Timothy's Lamp, etc. If the fund isn't recognized, you'll get a list of all the funds and you text back the number of the fund you wish to give to

PS: This is not connected to your phone bill. It it connected to a card of your choice.
Holiness of Beauty | Capital Campaign
Did you know?
The Church was constructed in 2000 at a cost of $1,200,000. Adjusted for inflation, that number is $1,791,391.00, $109,459 less than what we’ve raised so far. Well done! We still have a relatively low number of pledges and gifts. Imagine what we can do.
