The Cappies of Greater Cincinnati

Cappies, or The Critics and Awards Program, is a program for students who appreciate theater
and enjoy writing. According to their website, " The program strives to recognize Greater Cincinnati's talented community of young writers, performers, and technical crews. High school theatre and journalism students who participate in the Cappies program are trained as critics, attend shows at other schools, and write and publish reviews. At the end of the school year, the student critics vote to give awards to their fellow students for outstanding productions, group and individual performances, and achievements in technical categories. Awards are presented at the annual Cappies Gala at the Aronoff Center."

CCS has been involved with Cappies for years, and to do so, we need a minimum of five students who are strong in writing and grammar, enjoy the arts, and have the transportation necessary to see multiple theatrical productions at schools in the Cincinnati area.

"Girls Who Code"

Several in our CCS community are interested in starting a "Girls Who Code" club on our JH/SH campus. This national organization provides opportunities for students to "join a safe and supportive environment of peers and role models where girls learn to see themselves as computer scientists." In addition to learning how to code and hanging out with friends, the students work together to use computer science to solve real-life problems that they care about. We are looking for a parent or community member (a female, of course) to lead this club.

The club is free, and the organization provides a myriad of resources. The goal is to open a summer camp next year and prepare our female students for an opportunity to intern through the Summer Immersion Program in the future.

*If you are interested in helping, or know someone who might be perfect in this role, please contact Gina Smearsoll for more information. You don't have to be a computer scientist! You can learn right along with the "Girls Who Code."
