The intent of the scholarship is to honor Mr. Andrade's memory  by assisting an incoming Rhode Island College freshman of Azorean descent in attaining his/her higher education goals. The $4,000 scholarship ($1,000 for each of four years) is contingent upon the declaration of a minor or major in Portuguese Studies, maintaining a minimum 2.75 G.P.A. and full time enrollment status at Rhode Island College. The initially raised funds by Mr. Andrade's family and friends were matched by the Raytheon Corporation.

The award was presented by IPLWS Director Marie Fraley on behalf of Mrs.Goretti Andrade to Raquel Martins, a freshman whose intended major is Medical Imaging, minoring in Portuguese.

Study Abroad in Portugal Scholarships
Computer Information Systems Field Study

The IPLWS provided scholarships of $1,100 each for five students for tuition to take part in a field study in Lisbon during spring break from March 5 - 12.
Dr. Kyunsub Choi of the School of Management accompanied five students enrolled in  his CIS (Computer Information Systems) 350 IT course to Lisbon where they visited tech companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Oracle and Aptoide. In addition to enjoying the sights, sounds and tastes of Portugal, the students received valuable practical insights into the concepts that Dr. Choi was teaching in his classes.

This cultural and educational opportunity was made possible through the Study in Portugal Network (SiPN), a program of the Luso-American Development Foundation, a founding donor of the Institute.

The students who participated were:
  • Ben Demers
  • Justin Fontaine
  • Joshua Lima
  • Shasha Mishra
