Frank Adkins
Joins UPC Staff
Many of you know that your Staff Support and Building & Grounds Committees have been at work on trying to find a full-time Facilities Specialist for this church. After considering a number of candidates both by phone and person, we found much to our surprise and delight that the right candidate was already a part of our church family. And so it is my absolute pleasure to announce that Frank Adkins, long a member of UPC and a familiar face from our Sunday morning choir, begins today as our newest full-time staff member.

Of course, being a staff member is a bit different than being a church member, and so I will thank all of you in advance for helping us to make this transition both in Frank’s life and in our church life. One of the ways we can do that is by learning a new vocabulary word together. On Frank’s job description it says “Facilities Specialist,” but around the church we’re going to call him the Sexton.

“Sexton” is kind of an old-fashioned church word; it comes from the old church Latin for a “Custodian of Sacred Places.” Which is to say: a sexton is somebody who takes care of a place where God works, and I’m excited that Frank will help us take care of this place where God is surely at work.
Welcome,
New Members!
UPC Session welcomed four new members at their called meeting Sunday, December 3. Sisters Brown Hobbie (left) and Nel Hill (right) each relocated to Austin in 2015. Brown, who is a retired family nurse practioner, joins us by transfer of letter from First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC.
Nel, a retired librarian, joins by transfer of letter from Swift Creek Presbyterian Church in Mosely, Virginia. Brown and Nel have been visiting UPC for a few months, and are happy to formally become a part of UPC.
Also joining this past Sunday are Dan and Andrea Ellinor. You may recognize the Ellinors, who have been regular worshipers at UPC for about a year.

Please introduce yourself to Brown, Nel, Dan and Adrea the next time you see them. We will welcome all our new members in an upcoming worship service.

Let's Go Caroling!
Don’t worry, you don’t have to be an opera star to spread the spirit of Advent. This annual event is great for any age or ability level. Join the Deacons on December 10 after church for a quick lunch in Fellowship Hall, followed by an afternoon of Christmas carols to some of our members. Don’t sing? Grab some jingle bells and come anyway!

Please RSVP to Jennie Chao at  [email protected] or sign up at the Alternative Gift Market. Let a Deacon know if someone in your life needs some caroling. Thanks!

Is the Presbyterian Coffee Project involved in mission?
Yes!! By paying a fair wage to everyone in the production process of all products, we fulfill our call to “do justice.” These fair wages mean that small farmers can send their children to school, provide food for their family, and work together on projects for their communities in worker-owned
cooperatives. The farmer keeps his/her land.
The Small Farmers Fund is administered by the Presbyterian Hunger Program.

Service Committee Program Highlight
Street Youth Ministry
Most of you have heard about the amazing program we are honored to host here at UPC every Monday at 1:00 p.m. -- the Street Youth Ministry. Our building offers youth experiencing homelessness a clean place to shower, a computer lab to work toward finding jobs and resources, and a general gathering place in a safe and comfortable environment. The Street Youth Ministry program supports street-dependent young people in Austin. It builds relationships with the clients and provides crucial resources, such as meals and snacks, socks, toiletries, clothing, and bus passes. It offers access to strengths-based guidance counseling, prayer requests, group activities, worship, Bible study, and safe fun activities.
This past summer we took up a collection for clean underwear for the youth during the hottest weeks of the year. Just last month, through our Sweaty Sundays program, UPC created 56 cold weather survival kits to provide some extra sense of comfort during the coldest months. Please consider how you might get involved or contribute in your own way to this important program right in our neighborhood!

The Parenting & Faith class joins the Faith & Life class for the first three Sundays in December. Sunday, December 10, we will meet at 9:30 a.m. Room 201, upper level. See topics under Faith & Life.
Faith & Life Series:
Advent
Please join us for the next three Sundays as we welcome members of the Parenting & Faith Class and a wonderful line-up of topics and speakers for this special season of Advent:

December 10 - Eric Wall My Soul Cries Out: Music and Advent
In a month filled with music, what does the church sing? In this class, we’ll explore songs of the season – or rather, the seasons. How do Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany relate to each other in musical terms? What must we sing and hear so that we, as the church, can better offer words of hope and peace to a waiting world?

December 17 - Beverly Gaventa,   Mary in the Christmas Stories

We look forward to seeing you all throughout the month of December!

Grace and peace,
The Faith & Life Class planning group:
Madelyn Mitchell, Bobbie Sanders, Randal Whittington, Suzanne Wofford, Melinda Wofford, Elaine Wagner, Dave Jensen

The Present Word
Room 3, Lower Level
Sundays, 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
The Present Word Class is a discussion-based class that meets in Room 3 in the lower level from 9:30 to 10:45 every Sunday. Our background material is provided by the curriculum that gives the class its name. By using the provided scripture readings, we ensure that we are engaging with the whole Bible over time. However, this is not a Bible study class. The scriptures and weekly lessons are our starting point for lively discussions that include the week's events, current issues and our own Christian journeys.

During the winter quarter our guiding topic is "Faith in Action." We will be looking at different interpretations of what it means to live out our faith in Jesus Christ. The class is led by Roscoe Overton. We would love to have you come learn, share and pray with us.
