A NOTE FROM THE LIBRARY DIRECTOR

Dear community,
 I am pleased to be able to bring you good news this week! We are working hard on our plans to expand library service in a way that is safe for you and our staff. On June 1, we will begin to phase in library service. Our bookdrops will be open at the Downtown Library, 24/7, in order to accept your returns. I know you've been holding on to those books, DVDs, and more for months now, so we are happy to have a small crew of staff back in our closed buildings who will be processing your returns.
We are also in the planning stages for the next phase, which will be curbside pickup of your holds. If all goes according to plan, this will be offered at the Downtown Library beginning June 15. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more information.
 In other great news, this year's Summer Learning Challenge is going VIRTUAL! Our annual tradition of summer learning at the Library will be different this year, but it is still happening! The Summer Learning Challenge invites kids, teens, and adults to read, listen and learn during the summer. What would normally be a summer full of in-library programs, performances and learning activities will be presented 100% online this summer.
The Summer Learning Challenge is from June 1
st through August 31
st. Sign-ups begin June 1

www.redwoodcity.org/summerlearning. Please check our website often and all summer long for the latest information about summer learning. Children 18 years and younger will receive a free book for signing up, earn free prizes when they finish, and be entered into a drawing for a $1,000 scholarship. The child must be a resident of Redwood City or North Fair Oaks to be eligible to win. Adults who finish the Summer Learning Challenge will earn a chance to win gift cards from local businesses.
We are so fortunate to live and work in a community devoted to collaboration, art and performance that we developed a catalog of fun summer activities for all ages. Our physical locations may be closed but we are still here for you. Our staff has been intent on delivering as much fun at home this summer as you would get in-person at the four Redwood City libraries. Ready, set, take the challenge!  During the stay-at-home period, the library has changed its weekly Saturday morning ESL Conversation Group to an online format via Zoom. In addition, we have expanded the program to two online class meetings per week:
Tuesdays 6:00pm - 7:00pm
Saturdays 11:00am - 12:00pm
The group meets year-round and is open to all non-native English language speakers who are interested in developing their speaking fluency. The group meets via Zoom for one hour and welcomes students with varying levels of English proficiency. Each class meeting is an opportunity to develop English speaking skills in addition to learning English vocabulary.

Honor special friends in your life by learning to make simple friendship bracelets! During the event we'll hear three Lived Experience Academy graduates share stories of their experiences confronting mental health and/or substance abuse challenges.

Climate Action Discussion Group is back! We will meet via Zoom/phone on the second Thursday of the month to discuss the changing climate and the constructive actions we can take as individuals, families, and communities.

Stories from your Community: Tuesday 11am prerecorded stories from members of our community, including firefighters, community leaders, as well as stories in Persian and Mandarin!

Wednesday at 10am, a craft and storytime for ages 3-5.
Materials pick-up at the Downtown Library, then tune in at 4pm for stories and craft instructions.
Thursday at 10am, Librarian Armando is back with live English/Spanish bilingual storytime.

- All Redwood City Public Library locations are currently closed until further notice.
- Downtown Library bookdrops are open to accept returns beginning June 1.
- Library events are cancelled until further notice. Check our calendar here for online events.
- Meeting room reservations are cancelled until further notice.
- Due dates for all library materials, including Wifi hotspots, are extended through July 31.
- No overdue fines will be charged for any items currently checked out.
- Borrow eBooks and eAudiobooks; use streaming TV, movie, and music services; and access digital subscriptions to newspapers and magazines here.
- Our Zip Books service continues. Zip Books is a way for customers to request books that the Library doesn't own. The item is shipped directly to you using Amazon Prime.
