Forty Entrepreneurs Present at the 2018 Road Pitch

Road Pitch visited eight communities in Vermont between July 30 and August 2 to hear from 40 entrepreneurs. The event featured 56 "business bikers" with investing, entrepreneurial/business and business advisory experience, who stopped in eight Vermont communities to hear entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas to the group. The winners in each town will face-off in a pitch competition in October.

VEDA Announces Loans Totaling $7.1 million

The Vermont Economic Development Authority (VEDA) has approved $7.1 million in loans to help Vermont manufacturing, agricultural, small business and energy development projects move forward. The loans included $250,000 to support the manufacturing expansion plans of Hillside Precision in Bristol, and $129,000 to help RTAT Precision Machining of Georgia nearly double its manufacturing space.

Gubernatorial candidate Christine Hallquist has a bold promise that sets her apart from her Democratic rivals: to deliver fiber-optic internet connections to every home and business in Vermont. If elected, she said, workers in bucket trucks would take to the roads to hang cable by the end of her first term. Promises of universal high-speed internet are nothing new in Vermont politics, but every attempt to deliver it has fallen short.

Antin Completes Acquisition of FirstLight

Albany, NY-based FirstLight, a provider of fiber-optic communications in Vermont and throughout the Northeast, has announced that Antin Infrastructure Partners has completed the acquisition of FirstLight. Antin acquired the company from private equity firm Oak Hill Capital Partners, Novacap and Riverside Partners. Kevin Genieser, senior partner at Antin leading this transaction said, "We are delighted to be backing FirstLight in the next chapter of the company's history as it continues to expand its footprint in the Northeast."

Comcast Completes Roll Out of Gig Internet in Vermont

Comcast announced it has completed its deployment of a new Internet service that will deliver speeds up to 1 Gigabit-per-second (Gbps) to residential and business customers in the 156 communities the company serves in Vermont. Comcast's new 1 Gigabit Internet service uses DOCSIS 3.1 technology that makes it possible to deliver ultra-fast speeds over the existing communications lines that are already in most homes and neighborhoods.

Dynapower, the South Burlington-based manufacturer of power electronics for energy storage, has received the prestigious 2018 Electrical Energy Storage (ees) Innovation Award for its DPS-375 DC-DC converter. The innovative DPS line of DC-DC converters significantly reduces the cost to couple battery energy storage with utility-scale solar plants.
