LEADERSHIP LETTER: AUBRIE TARANTINO, ELEMENTARY COUNSELOR AND LAURA KARNES, MIDDLE SCHOOL COUNSELOR

Dear Dragon Families,
Just like our leaves are changing, we are seeing some amazing and very positive behavior changes in our students here at Flagstaff Academy. October is a time for us to solidify our routines, create proactive student goals, and continue reinforcing Dragon PRIDE.
October is also
Bully Prevention Month
. Flagstaff Academy is committed to ensuring a safe and effective learning environment for all students, free from harassment, intimidation, or bullying. At Flagstaff Academy, the learning environment extends beyond the classroom to include all trips, adventure/outdoor learning, and travel. Bullying is defined as aggressive behavior that involves unwanted, negative actions occurring as a pattern repeated over time and often involves a perceived imbalance of power or strength. For our specific policy on bullying and prevention, please refer to our
2019-2020 Family Handbook
.
Flagstaff Academy proactively supports healthy student interactions and minimizes bullying or intimidating behaviors through implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention Systems (PBIS) and Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Research shows that SEL and PBIS improve academic achievement and increases prosocial behaviors such as kindness, sharing, and empathy. Both boost student attitudes toward school, and reduce depression and stress among students. These programs at Flagstaff Academy include character education using
7 Mindsets
in our Kindergarten through our 8th grade classes, coupled with the
7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens
in our 6th-8th grade advisory classes. In addition to SEL and PBIS, Flagstaff Academy employs Restorative Practices by utilizing connection circles, solution circles, and strongly encouraging communication between our students on intent of actions, impact of actions, and restorative solutions.
