Day 55: A Sunday Music Break and Children's Putumayo

Destination:   World Music Day

Map World Music Day

Welcome to another World Music Sunday. Summer is definitely here. With temps headed into the 90's again, an early walk is planned and then time in the shade. Some old standards in music sound perfect we're introducing some great children's books.

"Broadway Jazz" -  Jazz takes the stage with swinging versions of classic Broadway show tunes.
PWM BroadwayJazz

Broadway Jazz  brings together the beautiful melodies of musical theater and the coolness of jazz for a beguiling collection. Broadway and jazz music's shared history and longtime reciprocal relationship make for a perfect musical partnership.

Unfortunately there is no music video we can share from this CD. Click the picture above for a taste of each of the tracks and no doubt many, if not all, will be familiar. A fun CD to add to your collection!

From Putumayo: "The CD opens with Kermit Ruffins' New Orleans-style take on "Ain't Misbehavin'," a song that owes a big part of its success to another Crescent City trumpet player, Louis Armstrong. Act 2 of our musical revue highlights the silky vocal styling of Maxine Sullivan performing Duke Ellington's "I Got It Bad, and That Ain't Good." Blues legend Jimmy Nelson reminds us that life is a "Cabaret" with his smooth performance of the title track from one of Broadway's most successful musicals."

"Legendary saxophone player Sonny Rollins delivers a moving instrumental version of a classic with his 1957 version of "I've Grown Accustomed to Your Face" from My Fair Lady. Our night at Broadway theater concludes with a double-header from the late, great Peggy Lee who sings two classics from Oklahoma, "People Will Say We're in Love" and then closes the album with "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning."

"Children of the World" by Tessa Strickland Kate DePalma , and  David Dean   (Illustrator) From Barefoot Books.
PWM ChildrenOfTheWorld

Not a CD at all! Rather, this charming book depicts kids of a wide range of shapes, sizes, races, abilities and lifestyles from countries and cultures all over the world.

From enjoying special days to trying on silly hats, this ground-breaking picture book celebrates the big ideas and everyday moments that all children share. At the end of the book, 15 pages of educational notes explain the detailed illustrations, encouraging meaningful conversations about diversity and inclusion. Older children will be empowered to explore these important issues on their own. An essential addition to every home or classroom library.

We just received these books back in stock. Perfect summer reading to share with children and grandchildren.

and also. . .
"From My Window" by Otávio Júnior and Vinina Starkoff (illustrator). From Barefoot Books.
PWM FromMyWindow

Inspired by his own childhood in a  favela (a shanty town)  in Brazil, Otávio Júnior's poetic story celebrates the diversity of this unique urban community.

What do you see from your window? This picture book from Brazil offers a first-hand view of what children growing up in the favelas of Rio de Janiero see everyday. A celebration of urban community living, brought to life by unique, colorful illustrations by Vanina Starkoff that juxtapose brick buildings with lush jungle plants.

More great reading to share to learn about diversity and children from around the world.

It's a hot, lazy kind of day.
Relax and enjoy!

The "Kneel for Nine" event in  Brookside yesterday was
KneelForNine KCUR
attended by hundreds in peaceful support that change must happen. People of all ages were there - babies in arms, toddlers, teenagers, older adults with canes and walkers. It was mostly quiet. Several started  kneeling at 2:30 and like a ripple in all directions, people knelt in quiet protest. Some who just happened to arrive to shop joined in kneeling. The silence was powerful.

Our Brookside store is open today from 12 to 5 and will be closed Monday and Tuesday. Our current hours are posted below my signature and we look forward to seeing you!
