From the Rector
Dear Parishioners and Friends,

Social media has (or is it "have"?) its pros and cons. One thing I enjoy, however, is the "memories" feature on Facebook. Every morning I get a reminder of what I was doing with my family & friends a year, two, or more ago. Just today, I was reminded that it was one year ago that we took up residence in the Rectory (and were completely unpacked in 24 hours). So much has happened since then, not least of which is the addition of Miss Emmy to our family (she turned 1 today).

The day we arrived in Tuxedo, we found a handmade "welcome home" sign on the door, and within a short time were introduced to the Garden Club, meeting many new friends. In addition to getting to know everyone at church, people welcomed us into their homes, and some even took us on an introductory tour of the lake aboard a pontoon boat. We have truly been blessed by the welcome we received, and appreciate your continued support and encouragement.

Over the course of a year, I have learned that this community is much larger, more complex, and diverse than I would have thought looking in from the outside. People from all over the area make up a weird and wonderful potpourri of personalities and perspectives. I still have a lot to learn, and many more people to meet, and we still have a house in Pennsylvania to sell. But, one year in, I feel like I am finding my way and getting a handle on things.

I am looking forward to many years of celebrating our faith together, as well as building up Christ's body, the Church in this place.

Blessings,
Father Rick

Feast of St. Mary the Virgin
The mother of our Lord is recognized on several feast days throughout the calendar year, but the most important one is August 15th, when the Episcopal church celebrates the Feast of Saint Mary the Virgin. Roman Catholics also honor Mary on this day with the Feast of the Assumption, and the Eastern Orthodox celebrate the Dormition of the Theotokos.

Here at St. Mary's-in-Tuxedo, August 15th is an especially important day for our community as we have been dedicated to Mary since our very founding. This year, there will be several ways to join in the festivities:
  • On Wednesday, August 15th, Father Rick will talk about the importance of the feast to our VBS campers; he will also hold a "missa cantata" (sung low mass) at 10am in the Chapel
  • On Sunday, August 19th, we will pull out all the stops with a Festival Eucharist at 10am in the Church featuring special music, Marian hymns and a sung mass.
We understand that many people are on summer holidays during this time, but encourage you to be present, especially on August 19th at 10am, if possible.
Safe Church Training
The diocese offers Safe Church Training concerning both children and adults, in both in-person and web-based training formats. The training teaches participants to recognize the signs of sexual abuse and the behavior of sexual perpetrators, how to respond to those signs and behaviors when they are observed, and provides screening information to help stop abuse before it happens.

For the staff, volunteers, and leadership of St. Mary's-in-Tuxedo, this training is mandatory, and a refresher is required every five years. It is offered by the diocese free of charge, and anyone can sign up. If you would like to take the in-person course, please see the flyer below and click on it to register. If you would prefer the web-based course, please contact Father Rick , and he will see that you are registered.
All are truly welcome at St. Mary's, which is located within the historic gates of Tuxedo Park and serves the entire Tuxedo community. Please tell the gatehouse you're going to St. Mary's, proceed thru the gates and we're on the right (plenty of parking available).
