Haight Renaming Committee Update
Last December, local activist and journalist Rasheed Shabazz raised concerns about the fact that Henry Haight Elementary was named after a 19th-century California governor who espoused racist views -- including that African-Americans, Asians, and Native Americans should not be allowed to vote.
In response to a petition asking that a new name be considered for the school, a renaming committee was convened this past spring. That committee has met four times and is currently planning activities to engage students, families, Haight teachers and staff, and the community to generate ideas for a new name. The committee will share more news about this starting in August - please stay tuned!
