August 2nd

Sunday, August 5
Worship at 10 am, Dowd Commons

Join us for worship this Sunday in the newly renovated Dowd Commons (lower level). This week we explore the concept of mercy towards the outsider and the vulnerable. Jesus makes our treatment of "the least of these brothers and sisters" the only real criteria for the final judgment. Yet mercy, the practice of benevolence in our relationships with others and the natural world, is incredibly challenging and pushes us "Beyond the Safe Place." This week's scripture is Numbers 6:24-26.

Congratulationss to Keasia Clarke Jones on graduating from Aspire!

"Learning for Life" is the message behind 8 th grader Keasia Clarke Jones and her three-year involvement with a program focused on developing leadership potential in girls. With the support of family and friends, Keasia successfully completed her commitment with Aspire on July 25 th . Here's what Keasia has to say about her experience: "Aspire was a life-changing experience. Even though at times it was hard, my teachers and my Aspire sisters helped me push through the summer. There are many things that I will miss about Aspire especially spending time with my Aspire sisters. These past three summers I have learned that kindness and courage and bravery and loyalty will help you succeed in life. My Aspire sisters have taught me to have thicker skin in situations and never give up."
Congratulations, Keasia! May you forever be a leader among your peers!

What is Aspire?
Aspire seeks to support motivated middle school girls who are limited in opportunity because of low family income and lack of exposure to higher education. The program recruits fifth grade girls from public and charter schools in neighboring districts where students face challenges prevalent in many urban schools today: coursework that is insufficiently challenging, class sizes that are too large, lower academic achievement among peers, and insufficient college guidance.  Over the course of a three-year commitment in middle school, Aspire girls participate in a variety of leadership-building activities in academic classes and exploratory workshops.

If you have any information regarding congregation members please email the communication manager, Aisha Newton. She would love to highlight them in the enewsletter or social media.
