EHRP Testimonial
By Ashley Henderson

During my 5th year at Cal State San Bernardino I started the EHRP program in the beginning of this year and have gained so much knowledge since. The workshops and meet and greets have allowed me to network in the HR community and meet other young professionals starting out. Being a part of this program has also allowed me to step out of my comfort zone when interacting with others and grow in a professional way. Since graduating from college with my Bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources, I have gained a mentor from the program., Pat Steet. Pat has helped me progress tremendously. She has revised my resume, gives me valuable HR knowledge, and helped me with my career choice. I'm excited to continue my journey with the EHRP program and expand my HR network and knowledge.
Engage Your Staff in 2018
By Stacey Barnier

As we closeout the year, it is a great time to start your strategic planning process for the department. This can include the usual stuff like updating your organizational/departmental mission, vision and values as well as defining goals and objectives to support that mission. More importantly, the strategic planning process can be a time to reflect on where you've been and where you want to go as an organization and celebrate successes.

One of the ways that we engage employees in my department is through our strategic planning process which starts with our department retreat. This year, w e kicked off the day with some words of encouragement from the big bosses while chowing on some oatmeal from the build your own oatmeal breakfast bar. After that, we had a really engaging presentation by Melinda Sewer-Muganzo on service and attitude when dealing with conflict. You may remember her from an excellent IESHRM Meeting. We did some strategic planning and built our Tree of Success followed by some lunch and dancing together. Once lunch was over, I got to trick the staff by telling them they were going to learn more about our Painter job series and told them they would all be temporarily reassigned to a Painter Apprentice for the afternoon. We enjoyed painting a tree lined path together with a little help from an excellent art instructor.

Another way to engage your employees in 2018 is to review traditions in your department. Have you ever given serious thought to how you celebrate birthdays and major life events such as graduations, birthdays, marriages and other milestones? Nothing is worse than missing a birthday or somebody feeling left out because they weren't celebrated in a similar fashion. A quick survey of your team can help you put something in place and ensure consistency.

Creating your own traditions with your team is a great way to engage them in the workplace. My team a Thanksgiving each year by donating a meal to others and then sharing a not so traditional Thanksgiving meal of tamales, beans, rice, pan dulce and some 80's jams to round out the event.  Instead of celebrating Administrative Professionals Day, all of the managers celebrate the staff throughout the whole week with different treats and activities including an afternoon tea, a trip to the cupcake truck, lunchtime movies all while covering the staff work stations so they can indulge in the festivities together.

It doesn't have to cost a lot of money and it doesn't have to take a lot of time. Whether you hold chili cook-offs, salsa competitions (the kind you eat or the kind where you move your feet), a bowling league or an office softball game, the most important part is to get the staff engaged. As we kickoff 2018, I hope you will join me in finding new and creative ways to get your employees engaged!

Inland Empire SHRM 2017 Highlights and 2018 Goals
Message from Board President, Lora Hassani

Inland Empire SHRM (IE SHRM) Chapter began a busy year with our legal update in January.  We rolled out the new Emerging HR Professionals (EHRP) Group early in 2017, and we held our first collaborative Mega Social/Micro Learning event with PIHRA. This year saw a large participation in our Certification Prep Classes earning IE SHRM the 2017 SHRM Learning System Champion Award.  In September we conducted a comprehensive membership survey and board election. We capped off 2017 with The Future of the Workplace Annual Conference, and our November meeting Improving Health in the Workplace.  A very successful year!

We are looking forward to an exciting 2018. Some of our meeting topics will include " Six Smart HR Strategies for Addressing Today's Serious Skills Gap," "Do I Really Have to Start Hiring Criminals," "Increase your Momentum for Effective Leadership," and so much more. Meeting dates and locations are posted on the IE SHRM website.  We are working on our annual conference for October 18, 2018 and will be sharing more information as it becomes available.
IE SHRM's EHRP group will have new events in 2018 to benefit those seeking to develop professionally and build a career in the HR field. EHRP is a great way for experienced HR professionals to mentor others, advance the HR profession and help others achieve their career goals.  If you are interested in becoming an EHRP mentor, or sharing your expertise by providing a training session, let us know.

Inland Empire SHRM membership has grown to over 450 HR professionals, making our chapter the largest single professional HR association in the region.  IE SHRM members are the reason our chapter continues to be a success. Ongoing member participation and input is an essential part of our chapter. Let us know what we can do to enhance your membership experience.

The board of directors would like to thank our members for making 2017 such a success. We look forward to engaging and collaborating with you in 2018!

Have a very Happy Holiday Season and a Happy New Year!
