Fall Session Theme... Poetry!
Acrostics, limericks, sonnets and more!
We are thrilled to be taking a deep dive into our creative sides while writing poetry with our scholars this session. For the next 9 weeks we will learn about iconic poets like Gwendolyn Brooks, Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou. At the end of our session, we will celebrate our sites’ Proud Days with a poetry slam performed by the scholars!
Poem By CEO/Founder, Dr. Tracy Bailey
Welcome to Freedom Readers
A place like nowhere else
A place where we can laugh and sing
Where we can be ourselves

A place for good folks just like you
We're always glad you came
To learn new words and give a speech
And proudly say your name

My name is Dr. Bailey!
Freedom Readers makes me proud
Each week we learn something new
We stand out in a crowd

We learn to choose the books that fit us
To read to understand
To make the words flow out just right
To be the best we can

Welcome to Freedom Readers
Get ready for the ride
Open your heart, your mind, a book
Our arms are open wide!

Thank you to Bonfire for the delicious food and beautiful space. Also, a special thanks is in order for our generous sponsors - Cliff & Carolyn Ellis Foundation, George Hearn, Moglia Family Foundation, Brittain Resorts Management, Maguire Law Firm, Hadwin-White, Denise Apple, Tantalizing Tanning and Spray Tans and Carolina Air Conditioning.
Way to go, Thomas Vu! Thomas attends the Scholars Academy and has been a long term tutor at our Bay Pointe site. Eager to help wherever he can, he is a hit with our scholars! Scholars look up to him, particularly a young scholar name Preston. Thomas even wore matching ties with Preston! You may also recognize Thomas from when he volunteered to dress up as Clifford the Big Red Dog while we celebrated our recognition as winners of the UPS Toys for Tots Literacy Program. He is a rock star tutor!
Getting to Know Thomas Vu, Freedom Readers Tutor
"My first time volunteering for Freedom Readers was the junior year in high school. Prior to my junior year, I had never considered joining Freedom Readers, and I didn't even know what Freedom Readers did. I first heard of it when my friend mentioned a lack of tutors and how she had to tutor two "scholars" at once- this was my sophomore year in high school. I would listen to hours upon hours of war stories on how she managed tutoring people of two different skill levels. After awhile, I became interested and curious about how I'd do if I were a tutor. I would've started tutoring right then and there, but I knew nothing about the process of joining. I waited until my junior year to finally join the club and participate. Ever since then, I've enjoyed the company of the many "scholars" that attend the program. I never really liked reading so I was hesitant at first, but I liked talking and playing with the "scholars". For me personally, my favorite part of the program was the interaction with younger kids."
Moveable Feast
Join Dr. Bailey at The Moveable Feast on Friday, September 27th at 11:00 am at Kimbel's restaurant on the Waccamaw River. She will be discussing Riverside Blues, a novel she wrote to honor the strength and resilience of the low-country's Gullah women. Come purchase an autographed copy of the book, enjoy a delicious lunch, and connect with 150 other book lovers in our area. You don’t want to miss this!
Freedom Readers’ Favorite Reads!
"Kwame Alexander's cadenced basketball novel is a gem of poise and grace. His players come alive with the precision and control of an orchestrated musical composition. The poetry of the telling rings through to the heart. The Crossover crosses over as a gift to all ages.”
-Ashley Bryan, Two-time Coretta Scott King Award winner
"Covering everything from centipedes to whales, from swinging on swings to ice-skating in winter, from eating applesauce to celebrating birthdays, the delightful poems in this extensive collection convey the experiences of childhood with a fresh timelessness.” -Barnes & Noble Customer Overview
