Chief's Corner

Welcome to the July/August edition of  The Dispatch , the Rancho Cordova Police Department's (RCPD) e-newsletter.

In July, I had the opportunity to meet many new residents and see many familiar faces at a variety of events in Rancho Cordova:
  • The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department partnered with RCPD to bring Unity in the Community to the City of Rancho Cordova for the first time. Hundreds of residents attended the event, despite the warm day, and I hope this gave you the opportunity to learn more about the wealth of services our entire department can provide to serve the Rancho Cordova community.
  • The City's 15th Birthday Celebration at Rancho Cordova City Hall was a momentous occasion! I was honored to be part of celebrating this milestone for our community.
  • The Fourth of July was a patriotic and hometown celebration, filled with fun for all ages at Hagan Park. In addition to proactively patrolling the event, our team provided free paddle boat rides to families, handed out many police department stickers to kids, participated in the parade, and enjoyed the most spectacular fireworks show in the region alongside you.
This edition features many special stories, including the introduction of our new detection K9 Zoe and a behind-the-scenes look at our Investigations Unit.

Thank you for reading this edition, and we hope to see you during National Night Out on August 7th!

Did You Know...?

In celebration of the City of Rancho Cordova's 15th birthday, we took a look back at the history of Rancho Cordova and our successes. One of these successes was the opening of our police station at 2897 Kilgore Road. Did you know the police station opened on August 31, 2011? An open house was held at the station and included a ribbon cutting, tours of the new station, and the dedication of the Larry Canfield Community Room, which pays tribute to RCPD Motor Officer Larry Canfield who was killed in the line of duty on November 12, 2008.
Problem Oriented Policing Unit Address Problem Properties

On July 9th, RCPD's Problem Oriented Policing Unit and Homeless Outreach Team, Sacramento County Probation Department, and the City of Rancho Cordova's Code Enforcement team conducted an operation focusing on residences that have generated numerous calls for service in the City of Rancho Cordova. During the operation, nine residences were visited, three residences were vacated as uninhabitable (red-tagged) due to substandard housing conditions, two felony arrests were made, and two drug citations were issued. On June 4th, the City of Rancho Cordova approved more than 50 community grants from the Community Enhancement Fund for the 2018/2019 fiscal year. The Crime Suppression Unit (CSU) is a highly proactive team consisting of a Sergeant and four officers that focuses on enforcement in high crime areas in Rancho Cordova. CSU was formed in 2015 and received a Community Enhancement Fund grant once again this year to support the program!  The Community Enhancement Fund provides an additional $1.3 million in funding to the $20 million+ annual police budget during the 2018/2019 fiscal year.  Learn More

Story of the Month
On July 13th, RCPD Officers assigned to CSU were conducting proactive enforcement in the area of West La Loma Drive and Folsom Boulevard. CSU Officers observed a suspicious person standing at the rear of a vehicle with the hatch open. The individual provided a name and personal information to officers that didn't match up with our records. When CSU Officers exited their vehicle to speak with the individual further, the individual ran. When CSU Officers caught up to the individual, the individual fought the officers before being detained.  Learn How the Story Ends
