September 2019
News From the Shelter
Coming and going
We have found new homes for 237 cats, kittens, puppies, and dogs from the first of the year up to September 1. During the same time we returned 110 lost animals to their grateful owners. As always, we cannot stress enough the importance of licenses and microchips for the speedy and safe return of your pets.

We can not continue to be so successful without our fabulous staff, our dedicated volunteers, and our generous donors.

Join this short, leisurely stroll through the port that supports us and these Jefferson County non profits;
the YMCA "Building Futures" Program, AEF's S.T.E.A.M. (think robotics and art), Kicks for Kids (getting shoes and boots for children in foster care) and the Scouts.
The 'race', from the PT Brewery to the Pourhouse with a well earned break halfway with treats and coffee, (those 300 yards can be exhausting!) kicks off at noon, hijinks start at 11 or so.
Children and pets free with a paying adult.
Costumes encouraged!
Can't make it to the event? Don't fret, you can buy a "Stay Home" ticket to support the causes.

Other fun fundraisers for us are this event hosted by Coldwell Banker Best Homes with a photo booth. Perfectly set next to Dogs a Foot on Water Street! Saturday, September 28, 11am until 4pm. Bring your dog and get a dog! Dogs a Foot are donating a percentage of sales to us.

Save the date! On Sunday, December 1 there will be an event with photos with Santa, a raffle, vendors with cool stuff, and more. It will be at the Tri-Area Community Center. Stay tuned!

            Paws up for our fosters!
Another busy kitten season is winding down. There are still some in care. We have dedicated fosters who do an awesome job with homeless kittens, some who come with moms and some who don't. Making sure that the babies are healthy and social before they can go to their forever homes is an act of love.

Happy place!
Congratulations and thanks to all who made the Mountain View Dog Park happen!
It was a long slog by dedicated people to get this acre of dog fun fenced and ready to serve the community. We love that one requirement for entry is that all dogs be licensed! Do remember that not all all dogs are social butterflies.
We are in the woods after all!
This young bear ambled through, we joked that he wants to be the beast at the Bless the Beasts and Children 0.5k

A fine resource
The San Francisco SPCA has been on the right side of animal welfare for a long time. Until July they had fine training classes for adopters. What they have now is a nice library of answers to common questions

Meet out newest board members!

Welcome to our new Board Members:
Nancy Boysen and Mila Webb!

Both of our new members of the Board bring experience in animal welfare and other non-profits to bear in their new positions.

Nancy moved from Indiana to Port Townsend after researching "smallish towns with arts, water, and mountains," visiting Port Townsend, and liking what she saw. As a free-lance writer she could live where she wanted. Nancy's husband built a house in PT and they have settled in with each other and their three shelter cats. Nancy has adopted several animals from shelters over the years. She volunteered at the PT shelter for a couple of years taking care of cats and putting out the shelter newsletter for a year.

After retiring, she saw the Board openings in the HSJC Newsletter and decided to channel her love of animals into volunteering for the Board. She has a background working in several non-profits, including Reading for the Blind in Indiana, and in Port Townsend, being on the Board of Key City Players and Chairing the PT Arts Commission.
Nancy hopes to use her project management and marketing skills to benefit the shelter as well as her talents and experience in fund-raising and writing.

Volunteer!
Volunteers are the valuable assets that make it possible to keep our shelter running. There are lots of ways you can make a difference in the lives of the dogs and cats in our care.

Mila originally hails from Texas, growing up in El Paso, and then spending time in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Mila was familiar with the Pacific Northwest, as she visited family in Vancouver, BC, as a child. She and her husband ended up in Seattle, and then moved to PT in 2017: "My husband wanted to try telecommuting and I'd always wanted to live in a seaside town."
Mila has a long history of working and volunteering with animal welfare agencies, including the SPCA of Dallas, PAWS in Lynnwood-foster care coordinator and adoption counselor at Cat City. Because Mila believes that "reducing the population of homeless pets is key to the welfare of companion animals," she has been a clinic and outreach volunteer at the Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Project in Lynnwood for ten years.
When Mila saw the HSJC Board had openings, she thought that the experience and ideas she has gained elsewhere would be useful in a new place. "I want to feel like I am continuing to contribute to animal welfare wherever I am."

We found Chloe a new home after her human passed away.
Do you have a plan for your pets?
We have had more than a few pets who came to us after their humans died.
Most of the pets have been seniors.
We are  happy to care for every animal that comes to us. Please plan for your pets in your will, ask friends and family to find a guardian for your pets.
