Panther Post

September 20, 2019
Message From the Principal

Dear Sullivan Families,

The Sullivan Panthers have had a productive few weeks! We completed three of our safety drills, sent two groups of students on walking field trips, and completed the first few lessons of our new math curriculum! Our 4th grade students are learning about Ellis Island in preparation for their simulation activity in October, and our 5th grade students are learning about the Solar System in science. In literacy, students are learning about plot structure, genre, author's purpose, and starting novel studies. Most importantly, our students are working hard to meet our expectations of being safe, respectful, and responsible.

Today, we announced our first PAWSITIVE Panthers of the year. Each Friday, one 4th grade student and one 5th grade student are recognized for their "pawsitive" contributions to their classrooms and the Sullivan community. The students get their pictures in the newsletter, and their names go on the PAWSITIVE Panther wall. We are proud to celebrate not only our students' academic accomplishments, but also their citizenship, kindness, and work ethic!

Have a wonderful first weekend of fall!

Warmly,

Traci Meziere
Principal

Classroom Snapshots
The Sullivan Ambassadors took a walking field trip to Aspired Living on Wednesday. They enjoyed lunch and conversation with the residents.

We are excited to continue our community partnership with Aspired Living this year. Each month, a 4th grade class will complete a project with the residents. We look forward to their first visit next month!
Our 4th grade literacy students are working on novel studies, and understanding plot structure. They have been practicing their reading and writing stamina through the Daily 5 Literacy activities in the classroom.
Yesterday, Mrs. Pennell, Mrs. Lett, Mrs. Sutton, and Ms. Wessel took their classes on a walking field trip to the Prospect Heights Public Library.

Mrs. Johnson-Bisanz and the students played genre bingo, as well as shared book talks on novels from each genre. Our 5th graders are even more excited about reading after hearing about so many great selections that are available for the book challenge!
MacArthur Student Senate Fundraiser
The MacArthur Student Senate is holding a Lurie's Children Hospital Fundraiser in November. They are looking for donations for raffle baskets. Donations can be in the form or tickets, gift cards, or services. Please contact Athena Kalaras ( akalaras@d23.org ) or Bryan Quesea ( bquesea@d23.org ) with any questions or if you can help.
