Church Building
Open by Appointment Only
Out of love for the Colonial community, the building is open only to staff or by appointment so we will not answer the door. If you have something to drop off or deliver, please leave it in the bin outside the office door and we will regularly move items indoors.

Colonial Church is currently accommodating groups of 10 or fewer who have made arrangements through the office in order to disinfect rooms after use. Please contact Heather with questions or to schedule an appointment.

AA Groups
AA groups that meet at  Colonial  on Tuesdays and Thursdays are meeting in person again at another location.  If you would like more information, contact  Heather  and she will put you in touch with the organizer.

Colonial Pub Night
So...the pubs are closed. Let's grab a cold drink and get together in Zoom. Join in the conversation at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16.

Summer Worship Series: Recover

Sometimes you've got to get sick before you can start feeling better.
We all need to recover. We're been trapped in unhealthy living, and this virus has made it clear how sick we are. As individuals, communities, and a world, we need to recover. This summer, God's Spirit will speak healing words in our sermons inspired by the Twelve Step Program. The wisdom of this path may be exactly what we need right now.

Pastor Aaron's 10th Anniversary

Happy Anniversary to Pastor Aaron, who joined the Colonial community as our senior pastor on June 1, 2010. A celebration of his 10th anniversary has been postponed until the fall, possibly in conjunction with
Pastor Aaron
Gathering Sunday
.

We will present Aaron with a special gift as well as funding for sabbatical and/or continuing education purposes and are continuing to collect your donations. You can donate online at https://colonialucc.breezechms.com/give/online and select "Aaron's 10th" from the dropdown menu or mail a check to the office with "Aaron's 10th" in the memo. Any amount - $5, $10, $25, $100 - is welcome. Help us show Aaron our appreciation.

Annual Meeting Via Zoom

Colonial's annual meeting will be Sunday, June 14 at 11:00 a.m. via Zoom (https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82825937016)
We will vote on the slate of officers for the new Church Council and the annual report will be presented. An email was sent last week with the slate of new Council members and the annual report attached. Click here to place your vote.

Congregational Meetings While Church Is Closed

The Council has decided not to reopen the church for in-person services or meetings until June 28 at the earliest.  You should have received a survey on June 1 asking for your opinion on what a safe reopening would look like. The Council will use the results of that survey to decide how to proceed.  You will be kept advised and perhaps consulted again on when and how to reopen.

In the meantime, congregational meetings, those that require a vote by the church membership and that must be announced two weeks in advance, will be done by email. You have already received two such emails.

The first was on renovation of the kitchen in the Heritage Room, made necessary by a plumbing problem. That vote was required because the cost will exceed $10,000, and church bylaws require that any such expenditure must be approved by the congregation. The two-week deadline for voting on that proposition was May 28 and the renovation has been approved.

Sometime after the June 28 Council meeting you will receive another email giving you two weeks to vote on the Council's recommendation on how to fix the moisture problem in the lower level. This, too, will exceed $10,000. The vote on the kitchen was presented first because Colonial Women had already initiated the project with their own funds and because of the plumbing issue that had to be fixed before the project could be completed.

Another email, which is about the Annual Meeting scheduled for June 14, was sent to you on May 28.  It has a link to the Annual Report to the congregation from the Church Council and a list of members recommended to serve on the Council effective June 14. There is another link in that email asking you to vote no later than June 14 on whether to approve the new Council members. Any questions regarding the Annual Meeting or the Annual Report may be directed to me.

Colonial Women Activities Resume!

All women of Colonial Church are invited to gather with others in casual fellowship opportunities, whether you prefer breakfast, happy hour or discussing a book. Check out the options below. No reservations required. Although we are not able to meet in the way that we are accustomed to, we are developing new ways to continue to support one another.
  • Blue Moose Tuesday. Tuesday, June 9, 5:30 p.m., Colonial Church front lawn. Bring your own chair, beverage and food as we gather - appropriately distanced - to talk and laugh together.
  • Book Group. Friday, June 19, 7:00 p.m., via Zoom. We will discuss "The Stolen Marriage" by Diane Chamberlain.
  • Coffee. Monday, July 6, 9:30 a.m., Colonial Church front lawn. Bring your chair and your coffee.

Coffee with the Pastor Update

We'll now meet back at Einstein Brothers - at the outside tables, if weather permits. Otherwise, we'll go over to Colonial Church and meet in the Heritage Room. See you on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. To get notified of changes, signup for the contact list at https://colonialucc.breezechms.com/form/931187

Ways to Buy Fair Trade Coffee

Colonial Church supports the Fair Trade movement. We usually sell coffee, tea, and chocolate on Sunday mornings, and now we're expanding it with the online store and have it delivered directly to your home. It's simple:
  1. Go to https://shop.equalexchange.coop/
  2. Create an account (as you join the rewards program, be sure to specify the UCC Project under the Coffee Project dropdown)
  3. Order your delicious Fair Trade coffee
You can also buy fair trade coffee locally at Ten Thousand Villages in downtown Overland Park.

Your Support Matters

Even though our building is currently closed, our work together matters - to each other and to the community. We are needed more than ever.

In the past few months, together we have:
  • Helped stock the Cross-Lines Community Outreach food bank,
  • Reached out to each other and the community through Care Partners,
  • Provided a pizza party for Sheffield Place moms and some of you have helped by purchasing items on their wish list, and
  • Supported Kar Woo's homeless efforts even when we can't serve meals ourselves. Colonial Women provided the funds for the meal for Artists Helping the Homeless in April.
Your pledges help Colonial to do its work. Counters are counting and we are making deposits.  You may mail in your pledge checks or any other payments. An easier alternative is to make contributions online.  You just fill in your banking information or provide a credit card and your name and email and what fund you are paying (Stewardship, food pantry, etc.) and the amount. The link you use is https://colonialucc.breezechms.com/give/online

Online Bible Study

For this week, read Hebrews chapter 10. Come to worship! That's the message for our reading this week. In a time when worship participation in this nation is quite low, this may speak to us in a different way. Our study is open to everyone. You can join the Zoom Bible study at 10:30 a.m. Thursday online at https://zoom.us/j/8796465039?pwd=NFFIMXZFbnJQQUVGMzJWRG9WT2tLUT09  with password 7039 or call in by calling 669-900-6833 with Meeting ID: 879 646 5039.    Everyone is welcome to participate.

Supporting Artists Helping the Homeless

For the past few years, members of Colonial have purchased, prepared and helped serve an evening meal on the fourth Sunday of the month to support the program of Artists Helping the Homeless.

The current social distancing lifestyle makes it necessary to adapt this contribution. Fortunately, the residents of Bodhi House are willing to purchase the ingredients for us and prepare a sack lunch that can be distributed following the current guidelines, though they have mentioned that they miss the home-baked cookies that are included from our kitchens.

We look forward to returning to our former way of contributing to this program soon, but until that time, please support our homeless population with a donation to cover the cost of the meal. Pay through our website by going to   https://colonialucc.breezechms.com/give/online
Select AHH from the dropdown menu.
Participate in the Search Process for a New Conference Minister

Edith Guffey is a fantastic Conference Minister, and she is due to retire next year. So, the Conference Council is in the process of forming a search committee. In keeping with our values, they are endeavoring to identify a diverse group of qualified candidates for the search committee.

Currently, they do not have anyone from the Kansas City area. The ideal candidate would be either 1) a lay person, male, gay or straight and/or 2) a person of color - Asian, Latinx, or African-American - who is:
  • Willing to review materials prior to meetings and come prepared with questions
  • Willing to respond to developments in timely fashion between meetings
  • Willing to listen respectfully to other points of view
  • Comfortable raising difficult issues and respectfully airing points of disagreement, but also willing to accept the group decision
  • Able to attend both day and evening (and potentially even weekend) meetings and conference calls (mostly by Zoom)
  • Dependable and reliable with follow through on commitments and responding to emails in a timely manner
If you are interested, please contact Bobbie Henderson at  [email protected] or 918-688-5925.

Food Donations

The need for food is greater than ever. Please be generous.  Since we can't fill the red wagon at Colonial each week, consider these methods of donating:

Monetary donations to Cross-Lines Community Services are always welcome.  Remember Whitey Ackley is in the Colonial back parking lot on Tuesdays from 12:30-3:30 p.m. to collect food for Cross-Lines, which he then takes to them.

Harvesters - The Community Food Network is encouraging the community to help by donating money. Every dollar donated helps ensure they have the food and resources on hand to meet any additional demand. It also helps get the food out more effectively and efficiently.

Celebrations!
In this time of staying connected remotely, please remember these folks who are celebrating milestones.
