From IACP's President...
I told you recently about the work your IACP Board of Directors is doing to chart a new course for our association. In addition to the draft strategic ends we've developed, we've also been thinking hard about who we represent and how big a tent our organization should be. Are we the voice for all of compounding or just part of it? Just retail, or health system practitioners, too? 503As, sure, but what about 503Bs?

Obviously, we represent compounding pharmacists. That's in our name, right? But the truth is, we represent many more stakeholders than just compounding pharmacists, and those stakeholders span the gamut of practice settings. We represent technicians. And academicians who focus on compounding. And vendors and suppliers. And even - this is aspirational, admittedly - prescribers and patients.

But you wouldn't know that based solely on our organization's name, would you?

That's why your IACP Board is considering a possible name change for our organization - a name that will more accurately reflect who we represent and what we do.

International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists has served us well. But although we welcome and appreciate our international members, we're not terribly international; Our focus is almost exclusively on public policy in the U.S. And we're not so much a learned academy of scholars as we are a group of allied compounding professionals. And, perhaps most importantly, we're an organization of pharmacists, sure, but not only pharmacists, not by a long shot.

After considerable deliberation, the Board has coalesced around a couple of possible new names that I want to share with you and ask for your feedback.

They both begin with the word "Alliance," which we think is an apt word for an organization like ours whose core competency is advocacy. I'll admit up front we like one of these more than the other, but they are both good choices:

I'll admit up front we like one of these more than the other, but they both are good choices:
  1. Alliance for Pharmacy Compounding. (We like "pharmacy compounding" because it's broad enough to reflect entire scope of our profession and business. It's positive in that it expresses what we're for, what we're about.)
  2. Alliance for Custom Medication. ("Custom medication" is an accurate description of the product we prepare. Trouble is, no one really knows compounding by that expression, and the concern is it will take years and lots of investment to get policymakers and others to recognize that custom medication means compounding.)
Like I said, we have a favorite. Let me know what you think, too. I expect the Board will make a decision at our meeting in early October about changing our name, and your feedback can help guide us.

34 associations send joint letter to USP about BUD restrictions
This week 33 other state and local pharmacy-related associations joined IACP in signing a joint letter to USP expressing concern about beyond-use date restrictions in the new <795> and <797> chapters.

"The proposed revisions regarding shortened BUDs will disrupt the sound, established therapeutic regimens of patients and will impede a health care providers' ability to effectively treat patients," the letter reads. "We strongly encourage USP to heed the concerns of a growing coalition of affected compounding pharmacists, prescribers, patients, and boards of pharmacy, and revisit the BUD restrictions contained in revised and before the effective date of the chapters."

IACP and the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations spearheaded the effort to develop and gather support for the letter.  Read the joint letter here.
IACP and partners formally request USP appeal hearing
As we reported in August, USP rejected three appeals by compounding pharmacy groups, including one to which IACP was a party, regarding beyond-use date restrictions in the new <795> and <797> chapters set to take effect December 1.

Last week, IACP and its partners Wedgewood and Innovations Compounding took the next step in the appeals process by formally requesting a hearing by a USP panel whose appointees are outlined in the USP Bylaws. USP has confirmed receipt of the request. We expect USP to set a hearing date shortly.  Read the appeal hearing request here.

By our reading of the USP Bylaws, it appears the effective date of the new chapters will be delayed by five months from the release of the decision of the hearing panel.

Has your board of pharmacy reached out to USP yet?
YOU CAN BE HELPFUL IN ASSURING USP HEARS CONCERNS FROM THOSE WHO WILL ENFORCE THE NEW STANDARDS IN STATES. We're talking about your state board of pharmacy.

ASAP, please contact your state board of pharmacy , alert them to the problems with the new chapters, and urge them to write to USP to share their concerns.
You can also email USP yourself - [email protected] - and urge your state pharmacy association to write to USP, too. To help, here's a briefing paper you can adapt into a letter if you wish.  Together, we can make a big difference for your compounding members and patients they serve.
