FVH Hot Shots Program Announced

We are excited to announce the Floyd Valley Hot Shots program!

Floyd Valley Hot Shots is a partnership between the Sioux City Musketeers and Floyd Valley Healthcare to honor pediatric patients, share their stories and educate the public on health issues affecting our youth.

The program is open to any current or former Floyd Valley Healthcare pediatric patients.  Due to safety concerns, we will accept nominations of children that are between 6 - 17 years of age.  Only parents or legal guardians may nominate their child.  We invite others to encourage families to submit a nomination.

The six chosen Hot Shots will receive tickets for their honor game, a commemorative Musketeer jersey to wear, Musketeer memorabilia to cheer on the team and time with the team and coaches.

Nominations for the inaugural 2018 Floyd Valley Hot Shots season are now open.  Applications are due September 30 with the 2018 Hot Shots being announced in October.

We are excited to be able to give children a chance to have a fun time with their family, cheer on the Musketeers and just be a kid for the night!  Please complete your nomination here.  Please contact Ann Cole-Nelson for questions.
Home Care Recognized Among the Best
Floyd Valley Community Health recently was awarded the SHP Best Superior Performer award for ranking in the top 20% in the SHP (Strategic Healthcare Programs) national HHCAHPS (Home Health Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers & Systems) benchmark. Community Health also scored above the national average on each HHCAHPS quality measure during the 2017 calendar year.

The Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS®) Home Health Care Survey is designed to measure the experiences of people receiving home health care from the over 4,000 Medicare-certified home health care agencies. The survey is designed to meet the following three broad goals:
  • To produce comparable data on the patient's perspective that allows objective and meaningful comparisons between home health agencies on domains that are important to consumers.
  • Public reporting of survey results will create incentives for agencies to improve their quality of care.
  • Public reporting will enhance public accountability in health care by increasing the transparency of the quality of care provided in return for public investment.
Tara Geddes, Floyd Valley Community Health Manager stated, "The award affirms the commitment our Home Health staff has to our patients. It is a unique situation caring for people in their homes, and we are glad these families place their trust in us. It is an honor to receive this recognition for the second straight year." Community Health saw 277 patients in FY 2017 which equated to 4,704 nursing, 1,464 therapy and 3,581 aide visits throughout Plymouth County and Marcus. They can provide a number of services including: assessments, medication management, infusions, wound care, therapy and bath assists.
Celebrating 20 Years of Family Practice
Dr. Sheila Holcomb
Growing up in Yankton, SD, Dr. Sheila Holcomb thought about being a funeral director or a pathologist when she grew up. Fast-forwarding a bit, Dr. Holcomb got married and had 4 kids, then went to college, medical school and residency and started practicing medicine at the newly remodeled Medical Associates in 1998.

Dr. Holcomb has seen a number of changes since arriving 20 years ago. The most noticeable change includes Floyd Valley Clinics moving into the North Addition of Floyd Valley Healthcare. The physicians also provided medical coverage for the Emergency Department, which is now covered by a company specializing in emergency care with local doctors on-call. The Electronic Medical Record (EMR) has also been a big change to the world of medicine. The ease of finding patient information in a quick, consistent manner helps with treating patients.

One of the most enjoyable parts of her practice is the variety of people. Throughout the day, she may get to a see a newborn, someone in their 90's and everything in between. She also has been the Chief Medical Examiner for Plymouth County since 2004 and currently is serving as President of the Iowa Association of County Medical Examiners. This is a nice melding of her childhood dreams in combination with her medical practice, one in which she enjoys.

Looking to the future, Dr. Holcomb hopes that insurance changes evolve to help the patient, not hinder their care. She sees other physicians suffering from burnout in other practices, so she continues to work towards more personal time to spend with family.
