SEEKING CANDIDATES FOR CHAMBER BOARD

The Sterling Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce is looking for potential candidates for our open board of directors positions. We are currently seeking board seat nominations for three-year terms covering 2019 - 2021, and we invite qualified members to run for a seat on our board of directors. Serving on the Chamber's board of directors is a great way to become more engaged with the organization, connect with the regional business community and stand out as a leader among your peers.

Current Directors whose terms expire in 2018 are Ron Chriss, Al DeFlaviis, Brad Lukas, Angie Lommen, Dr. Christine Johns, Mike Kramer, John Winter and Mark Vanderpool. We currently have no vacant seats, so we will be filling eight (8) spots to three-year terms.

Eligible directors and qualified members with an interest in serving on our board can submit nominations for consideration by our Nominating Committee. Please contact Chamber President Melanie Davis at 586.731.5400 x22 or [email protected], for more information and to obtain the necessary application.

CHAMBER REWIND...

ANOTHER FIRST CLASS STERLINGFEST!

Photos by Chamber Board Chairman David M. Beran, B&B Merchant Services

Our partnership with the city of Sterling Heights has once again helped to bring a first-rate festival to our community, and with each passing year, it seems to get even better!

THANK YOU to our many volunteers. You are the lifeblood of our Chamber, and we're deeply thankful for all you do, at so many levels, day-in and day-out for Sterlingfest, our biggest event of the year.

Nearly 150 Chamber members, families and friends put in more than 400 hours of volunteer shift time.

A festival of this size takes a lot of time and effort from the city and the Chamber, and it's worked on virtually year-round. The Chamber staff handled the many details associated with the new Pavilion Zone, Big Stage Zones, and the Jazz & Blues Bar Zone.

A special thanks to Burg's Enterprises Inc. and Tedesco Building Services Inc. for donating the services of their companies to help keep the pavilion neat and clean over the three-day event, and thanks to our many sponsors: Petitpren, DTE Energy Foundation, Barefoot Wine, Macomb Prompt Care, Beaumont, First State Bank, Regency at Shelby, Cherrywood Nursing and Living Center, UHY Advisors, Manpower, Renewal by Andersen, MOD Pizza, Linden Construction, HAP, UBREAKIFIX, Advanced Gutters, Hennessey's Pub and Kitchen and B&B Merchant Services.

It takes a village to pull off an event like Sterlingfest, and we think our "village" is the best! On behalf of the Chamber staff and board, we thank all of the wonderful people who helped make Sterlingfest 2018 such an incredible success. See you next year!

MEMBER TIP:
IS YOUR POWER OF ATTORNEY STALE?
by Terri North, Legal Strategies, PC
Legal Strategies receives many phone calls after a child starts handling her parents' affairs. Often the child is frustrated because a bank or financial broker is refusing to accept a power of attorney, and the child cannot get control of the assets needed to pay her parents' bills.

Here are some of the common reasons that a power of attorney might be rejected. If any of these are true of your power of attorney, then you should get it updated before your agent needs to use it.

Tourism & Hospitality Committee

Our Tourism & Hospitality Committee meets every other month and works successfully to promote both tourism and hospitality in our county, especially as these two important industries relate to our members. Supporting the "Blue Economy" initiative is a key part of our agenda for this group.

Currently chaired by TownePlace Suites by Marriott's Sales Manager, Michelle Matwiejczyk, this vibrant group includes regular appearances by representatives of our partners at the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau (DMCVB) along with officials from a number of our Macomb communities. If you'd like to learn more about the Tourism & Hospitality Committee, including meeting schedules, please contact committee liaison  Patty Le Duc, at 586.731.5400 x21 or  email . The next meeting will be held Tuesday, August 7 at 9 am at the Sterling Heights Senior Center where we will be given a tour of the newly remodeled Dodge Park featuring their new stage, pavilion and splash pad.

M-59 RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT UPDATE FROM MDOT:

The project continues along with each one of MDOT's contractors making progress this past week. The majority of the old pavement has now been removed and over half of the underground storm sewer has been placed. Weather permitting, the paving contractors will be on site tomorrow to place the first lift of asphalt at Romeo Plank. They will then return the following day to place the second layer of asphalt.  The day after that layer is completed, MDOT should be able to reopen the Romeo Plank and M-59 intersection.  Please let MDOT know if you have any concerns or questions.
