2018 Concert in the Park!

Orange Memorial Park

Join us for a fun day at Orange Memorial Park, celebrating music and community at the fourth annual Concert in the Park, Saturday, September 22 from 11:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Attendees will enjoy dancing to music by the legendary Latin Rock band, Malo. Come early to enjoy performances by El Camino High School Jazz Band and South San Francisco High School Jazz Band or venture over to the Family Fun Zone complete with bounce houses, a rock wall, train rides, petting zoo and more! Fall 2018 Registration

Fall 2018 Registration is quickly approaching. Resident registration will begin on Monday, August 13 at 6:00am. Registration will take place on the new rec software system, CivicRec; if you have yet to register with the new system please take the time to familiarize yourself with the process before August 13. Both the Recreation office and Orange Pool will be open early starting at 6:00am to assist residents with in-person registrations or questions. Non-resident registration will open on Monday, August 27. Check your mailboxes for the Fall 2018 Activity Guides which were mailed out on August 30; the Fall Activity Guide is filled with great programs and classes for all ages. Delectable Popsicles Recall Youthful Delight
It was a warm and somewhat humid day in Orange Memorial Park, yet these particularly inviting popsicles did not melt. Rather the nine foot trio of stacked treats recalled images of youthful delight indulging in the refreshing snack. What could the flavors be, perhaps strawberry? grape? orange? watermelon? boysenberry? mango? Appropriately titled "Popsicles," the second sculpture acquisition created by sculptor CR Gray is located on the roundabout median, at the end of the picnic area parking lot, off of Memorial Drive. Join us in our annual Senior Picnic at Joseph A. Fernekes Recreation building at Orange Memorial Park on Friday, August 17, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. We will be hosting the Senior picnic in a cooperative effort with the South San Francisco Fire Department. You can expect live music by Country Casanovas. We will be serving BBQ Chicken, corn niblets. potato salad, dessert and coffee or tea. Music and desserts will be sponsored by Westborough Royale. Registration Fee: $6 per person

This always-enjoyable, fundraising event will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., on Sunday, August 26, 2018, at the Joseph Fernekes Building, Orange Memorial Park, 781 Tennis Drive in South San Francisco.
 
Savor a delicious grilled lunch by J & J Barbecue with tasty dessert treats. Activities include a silent auction for a marvelous variety of gift certificates, art and craft items, and featuresS.F. Giants vs.  Colorado Rockies  tickets with parking. DJ Troy will provide musical entertainment. Enjoy a special demonstration of Dia De Los Muertos / Day of the Dead traditional craftwork and art courtesy of Peninsula artist, Eva Portillo.

Admission is $15.00 for adults and $5.00 for children-16 & under. Proceeds will benefit South San Francisco cultural arts programs. Tickets may be purchased at the SSF Parks and Recreation Department office, 33 Arroyo Drive or the Parks Division at 550 North Canal. Tickets may also be purchased online through Friday, August 17. Visit the SSF Recreation Division "Online Registration" webpage, and select the Special Events tab. Only service dogs are permitted to enter the facility.

Save the Date for the 1st Dia de los Muertos / Day of the Dead Art Show
Artists - Entry Guidelines Now Available

The Cultural Arts Commission announces its final art 2018 art gallery exhibit, featuring two and three dimensional art and crafts highlighting the Dia De Los Muertos / Day of the Dead traditions. Eligible media include painting, photography, sculpture, fiber arts and specialty crafts. Complete entry guidelines and applications may be downloaded by visiting the Current Opportunities for Artists webpage at www.ssf.net/rec . Applications can also be obtained at the SSF Department of Parks & Recreation office during business hours.
 
The exhibit will take place on Friday and Saturday, October 12 and 13, at the South San Francisco Municipal Services Building. Exhibit hours are Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event will be open to the public, and admission free. The Orange Memorial Pool is currently open for the summer. You can view the current pool schedule herePlease note, the pool will be closed from Monday, August 9, 2018 through August 19, 2018 due to maintenance. The pool will re-open on August 20, 2018. The South San Francisco Friends of Parks and Recreation will be hosting the Paint with Friends event on Friday, September 7 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Joseph A. Fernekes Recreation Building in Orange Memorial Park. Join us for a fun paint and wine night! Doors will open at 6:00pm with lessons beginning at 6:30pm. Admission is $50 per person. The cost includes:
  • Painting instruction by Artist on Wheels Studio
  • Take home canvas
  • Art Supplies
  • Wine and appetizers

The Parks and Recreation Department is taking reservations for indoor facility rentals and picnic sites. We offer several halls and meetings spaces for nearly any event, including corporate meetings, weddings, dances, birthday celebrations, and banquets. Picnic rental reservations for 2018 are now being accepted.

Asian Art Museum presents Glorious Civilizations of Southeast Asia

A docent from the Asian Art Museum's Community Speaker Program will deliver an educational and entertaining multimedia talk on Glorious Civilizations of Southeast Asia. Ten countries, numerous cultures, thousands of years. Explore the varied and intriguing art of Southeast Asia as reflected in religious and secular objects from this fascinating region. See images of sculptures from Angkor Wat, Buddhas from Burma and Thailand, and textiles from the Philippines. This program is made possible by the South San Francisco Friends of the Library.
