June 2018: Light Green Machine Principles begin long before you break ground
You are likely going to say, "I know that, Jim." You have been talking about designing to such principles for a long time. I want to take it a bit further this month.
We often think of construction as just a necessary activity before we get to make paper. In some ways, this is true. But consider this--I have watched many machines being built over the years. The difference in construction time between those companies who practice Light Green Machine principles and those who do not is often two years or more. That is two years of markets lost, two years of additional interest costs and on and on and on.
I don't have to tell you, the longer an activity occurs, the higher the probability of a serious accident, too.
How can one company build essentially the same facility, at least as far as output of quality product from the finished facility is concerned, build so much quicker than another? They pay attention to the details, they are interested in the process of construction.
So many operating companies look at construction as just a necessary evil. Construction is far more than that--it can set the tone for the entire life of the mill and seriously impact its lifetime profitability.
Construction needs the same focus and attention as does operations. It is nothing to fool with.
