Attend Dangers of Vaping Parent Presentation on 10/2
|
|
Electronic inhalant devices, commonly known as vaporizers or e-cigarettes, have become a part of the national conversation lately. In recent months, you may have seen reports linking serious respiratory problems and even fatalities to their use. In some cases, the devices are being marketed directly towards adolescents and teenagers, and many feature flavors that appeal to young people. The devices can be difficult for parents to spot, often appearing to resemble pens, USB drives, and other ordinary small items.

The Food and Drug Administration cites a recent study that vaping has increased by 50% among middle schoolers since last year. Indeed, these troublesome trends are impacting our local community. It's essential that our students and parents fully understand the dangers of these products.
For these reasons, as a school district, CCSD93 is collaborating with the Carol Stream Police Department, Northwestern Medicine, and the Carol Stream Park District to hold a presentation for parents on the Dangers of Adolescent Vaping scheduled for 7 p.m. on October 2 at Fountain View Recreation Center in Carol Stream. During the presentation, which is open to all community members, attendees will learn crucial information regarding health effects of vaping devices, what they can contain, how to spot them, and what the law says about their use. They'll also have the chance to ask questions of local police, medical, and school experts.
Please join us for the crucial Dangers of Vaping evening in person or on our Facebook page where we'll live stream it. In the meantime, I invite you to view this informational pamphlet about e-cigarettes from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
We're also working on bringing additional teaching and learning resources into our middle schools to help students understand the negative health effects of using vaping devices, how to resist peer and marketing pressure, and more. We'll send more information when these resources are in place. Together, we can keep our kids healthy and safe.

Elementary Students Learn Firsthand from Authors!
|
Students at Elsie Johnson and Heritage Lakes engaged with authors who visited their schools this week.
Normal Kid book series authors Chris Smith and Greg James visited Elsie Johnson School, where 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students heard about their writing process and collaborated with them to create an all new story in real time!
Heritage Lakes 4th and 5th graders welcomed author, wildlife educator, Animal Planet host, and YouTube sensation Coyote Peterson who spoke about the latest entry in his
Brave Adventures book series and then took questions related to being an author, his educational background, and his interactions with animals in the wild!
These terrific opportunities provided relevant learning experiences designed to further ignite students' love of literacy.

FREE Glenbard Upcoming Parent Series Presentations!

As previously shared here, Glenbard Parent Series (GPS) is an ongoing series of free workshops and presentations geared toward helping adults navigate parenthood in modern times. They're terrific resources for our community, and even though it has Glenbard in its name, CCSD93 parents with or without students in high school absolutely are invited to attend. Check out the GPS programming scheduled throughout the next week that you may find valuable.

9/19 Board of Education Meeting Preview
|
CCSD93's next Board of Education meeting will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 19 at Western Trails School (860 Idaho Street in Carol Stream). Prior to the meeting, at 6:45 p.m., Board member Rogelio Orozco will be available for a Listening Post, which is an opportunity for community members to speak directly with a Board member in a less formal setting. All community members are invited to attend Thursday's Board meeting. The following are among the agenda items.
- Western Trails School students will lead the Board in a Climate & Culture Circle, which is a type of strategy used at Western Trails to build community, solve problems, and learn collaboratively.
- There will be a public hearing and a vote on the adoption of CCSD93's 2019-20 Budget.
- Dr. Hill will update the Board on progress the District is making to achieve the Board's goals.
- There will be a presentation on CCSD93's safety drills by CCSD93 Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Cathy Brennan.
- The Board will review the Administrative, Non-Administrative, and IMRF compensation reports before they are published to CCSD93's website.
- There will be four revised Board Policies for first reading:
- 270.19 - Public Participation at School Board Meetings & Petitions to the Board
- 410.30 - Insufficient Fund Checks
- 465.04 - Emergency Plans
- 500.03 - Job Descriptions
