Just in Showcase
September 2019

First Vice President
Barbara Damerel

How can I make a change within the organization?” It’s a question you might have thought about but never knew the process. A change/suggestion is made in an issue paper that is submitted to the 1st Vice President for the Policies & Procedures Committee.

What is a policy and procedure? What is a Bylaw? It is important to know the difference as many want to make a change, but are unsure on how that is accomplished. Or someone tells us it’s okay to do something and then you discover it conflicts with a Policy or a Bylaw causing confusion and/or embarrassment to the member.

A Bylaw can only be changed, altered or amended by a vote of the entire General Membership. This is the framework of PSHA. A policy and procedure can be proposed, changed, altered, amended or discarded by the majority vote of the Board of Directors.

Please print your own copy of the Policies & Procedures and the Bylaws from the PSHA website and review them. You might be surprised when you read something contradictory in a report. This would help strengthen your role as a member and be enlightening for the long time members as many Policies, Procedures, and Bylaws have changed over the years.

So, you have a great suggestion for a change or improvement you would like to see implemented. The best way to suggest change is to submit your idea in an issue paper. What is an issue paper? Listed below are the seven items that need to be included in an issue paper for the Policies & Procedures Committee:

  1. Date: Issue papers need to be submitted to the 1st Vice President seven to ten days prior to the Policies & Procedures Committee meeting. A schedule of meetings is listed at the end.
  2. Issue: State the issue concisely.
  3. Background Information: Submit relevant history/background information on the issue.
  4. Proposed Solution: Outline a specific and detailed solution.
  5. Pros: List the advantages of the proposed change.
  6. Cons: List the disadvantages and possible consequences of the change.
  7. Notes: Submit any other information you might offer, for example citing an existing Policy, Procedure or Bylaw.

Issue papers are presented anonymously to the committee so each idea is considered on its merit and the committee is not influenced by who the author is. By reading the Policies & Procedures and the Bylaws, each member will be better informed and can avoid errors.

Second Vice President - Benefit
Jill Fosselman

What a summer! I’m pleased to share that we’re under contract on a home in Arcadia in the Santa A nita Oaks neighborhood. The predominantly original 1937 home was designed by architect Gerard R. Colcord in the Federal-country style that was popular with many Hollywood socialites at the time. The home sits on park-like grounds and strikes the perfect balance between traditional elegance and relaxed family living. We feel very hopeful and positive about our upcoming hearing on our Temporary Use Permit before the Arcadia City Council this month. Be on the watch for an email regarding the date and time for the hearing – I’d love for everyone to join us at the meeting!

Not only do we have a great house for 2020, we are poised to present an engaging, collaborative, and music-forward benefit! Many members of Team 2020 have been hard at work over the summer – I’m awed and inspired by their knowledge, creativity, and business prowess. A few highlights include:

  • Tickets – Marti Farley, Kim Galloway, and Garret Collins have been diving into the data detail and developing a solid plan to achieve our goals in ticket sales.

  • PR/Marketing – PR Chair Michele Lembo and Dotty Ewing are reevaluating how and where we spend our time and resources, and developing plans to significantly beef-up our social media presence.

  • Design – Diane Hatfield, Diane Boysen, Annelise Dachel, Irma Miller and Debra Qurtman – team has been killing it recruiting and cultivating designers, determining and naming design spaces, and exploring ideas and resources for sustainable design.

  • Sponsors – Matt MacIntyre, Lynn Mehl, and the PR mavens have been developing plans to incentivize sponsors by bringing together our nexus of social media, site relationships, and co-branding.

Special thanks to Linda “I’m-outta-here-in-January” Zimmer who is getting us prepared and organized for Designer Walk Thru, Eileen Reilly for doing not one, but TWO owner contracts (and all associated attachments and certifications), and Hostess-with-the-Mostest Marybeth Rehman-Dittu for hosting a bang-up cultivation BBQ for prior Showcase designers and major resources!

On a personal note, I’m humbled to be the current guardian of our rich history and navigator of future change. With each day that passes my respect grows deeper for
each of the women who have walked in these shoes before me. Although honoring our heritage, there will be many changes this year that I believe will position us for a stronger future. And if we hang in there with each other, embracing change, we’ll nail it together!

Fourth Vice President - Gifts & Grants
Marsha Seyffert

Kudos to Christine Upton for bringing Gifts & Grants into the 21st Century. She singlehandedly researched, found an organization to help us manage our Gifts & Grants and developed our online presence. All applicants can now apply online through the Common Grant Application’s system. We can even view the final reports online. We are no longer killing trees and carting around boxes of applications. This has made this part of our organization more manageable. Thank you Christine!

Associate Representatives
Marybeth Rehman-Dittu & Eileen Reilly

First off, we are the 2019-2020 Associate Representatives on the PSHA Board. Second, when we got together to discuss plans for the upcoming year, we realized that we really needed to try to figure out if there are things that could be done to encourage more of our Associate members to participate in PSHA events. Third, we recognized that we could not do this alone and that we needed input from a cross section of Associates. So, on August 1st, we hosted a “focus group” meeting and, with Marybeth providing the food, not only did we come up with some ideas to pursue; but, also, we had a great time doing it! Our thanks to Associates: Rary Simmons, Fran Biles, Erika Riley, Karen Stracka, Janet Dahl Willcox, Debra Scott, Jan Emamian, Barbara Sanchez, Nancy Maclean, Karen Daroca, Andrea Kelly and Linda Polwrek for their valuable advice and counsel and to our President, Vikki Sung, and Benefit Chair, Jill Fosselman, who also attended and provided us with information about the upcoming Showcase year plans and opportunities and who listened and, more importantly, heard the concerns raised by the participating focus group members.

Our next step was to put together a summary report of the issues discussed at the meeting that will be presented to the Board so that we can begin to implement some of the suggestions made at this meeting, which we hope will mean that our Associates, as a whole, will feel more involved in our organization and will, as a consequence, participate in various informational and/or fun-filled PSHA activities that we will be encouraging you to attend. We are so looking forward to seeing more of you at our 2019-2020 events!!!

And, to kick off these events, you should have, by now, received an invitation to the Halloween Haunt to be held at Marybeth’s house on October 29th. If you have not received an invitation via email, please let one of us know. If you have received the invitation but have not yet responded, please do so…we are hoping to see you and, if you know Marybeth at all, you know it will be slightly over the top and altogether a lot of fun!!!

Website Liaison
Katherine Watkins

In 2007-2008, when I was the PR Chair, President Gretchen McNally told me that PSHA was going to build a website and asked if I would assist. I spent many long hours in a small room with Gretchen, Kathryn Hofgaarden, the Website Chair, and Donna Gotch, Publications Chair, along with a couple of certifiable nerds (and I use that term with admiration) who only spoke tech. I remember that it was difficult for them to wrap their heads around the complexity of the organization and that we were frequently, patiently, making corrections.

Fast forward eleven years and I again find myself in a small room with a couple of certifiable nerds but fortunately I speak their language a little better now. But I am still frequently, patiently, making corrections.

Last year the Website Committee engaged an agency to build a new website for PSHA and decided on the type of online presence that we wanted PSHA to have. One of the strengths of this agency is their ability to write copy that is engaging. All of the public pages have gone through the scrutiny of their writers and have been revised. It then went through an internal PSHA approval process. It is more lighthearted, sometimes whimsical, sometimes funny, but definitely not your Mother’s Blah, Blah, Blah.

As you have undoubtedly noticed, the format and character of websites has changed significantly in the past decade. Deciding on the hierarchy of each page and the structure was initially a little confusing. But with guidance we have made large strides and I think we have made good decisions.

Those of you who know me will not be surprised to learn that the first set of colors and fonts they proposed was rejected with a dramatic cringe. The next set elicited the comment “This looks like a bank, open a checking account and get $50 free.” But, by the third round they hit upon a color combination that we all found acceptable and attractive and hope will represent PSHA well. Phew!

The programs back through 2010 have been converted into online magazines and will be available on the new website. We spend a small fortune on creating these impressive programs each year and this will extend their life span and impact. We think the public, the designers and the advertisers will be pleased with this feature.

We also have created more of a presence to acknowledge Dunn-Edwards Paints. While contractually we are obligated to post their logo and a link to their website, we think that they deserve more recognition from us. Additionally we can benefit by sharing a link to their archive of past Showcase paint colors as well as the current palette.

For those of you who prepare files that get “attached” to the website – things like the Shops Vendor Application, or Gifts & Grants Guidelines (for applicants), or the Membership documents for prospective members, etc. there is now a Style Guide so that there will be consistency for all of the documents on the website. Previously we had a fairly creative array of styles.

So this is probably more than you ever wanted to know, except when will the darn thing be done! I wish I knew. The response that I get is that they are as anxious as we are to complete it. It is painstakingly slow going over each page, each detail, each word, each image. I keep saying that it is better to do it right than fast. But admittedly you should probably keep sharp objects out of my reach. However, I am excited, because when it does finally launch, I think it will be like when the Wizard of Oz changes from black and white into color.

Meeting & Event Location

All General Meetings (except for the one in October), Board and Benefit Committee meetings will be held at the Shakespeare Club of Pasadena located at 171 South Grand Avenue in Pasadena
