NEWS & UPDATES
Minuteman Library Crawl and Scavenger Hunt
Wednesday, August 1st
9am-5pm, Belmont Public Library & 32 other participating Minuteman Libraries

33 Minuteman libraries, including the Belmont Public Library are participating in this year's crawl, a fun way to visit multiple libraries in your area. You can travel from library to library, participate in the scavenger hunt, meet the friendly staff and learn more about what the libraries around have to offer! View a list of participating libraries

The challenge is to visit as many as you can. Take a picture of yourself with each library's designated treasure hunt item, and post your pictures with the appropriate library tag. Here in Belmont, your task is to find the fiber-optic Frankenstein, in celebration of our One Book One Belmont pick.  Visit 5 libraries, show your pictures to the 5th library on your tour, and win a prize!

Use the dedicated webpage for the event,  minutemanlibrarycrawl.org, or visit the Belmont Public Library to receive a list of participating libraries and treasure hunt items. For more information, email Mary at  mcarter@minlib.net.
Purple Heart Ceremony
Tuesday, August 7th
10am, Library front steps

Join us at the Belmont Public Library for the 2018 National  Purple  Heart Day Observance and Recognition  Ceremony. Our Guest Speaker will be Belmont resident, Co-Pastor of the All Saints Episcopal Church, U.S .Army Colonel Paul L. Minor, Senior Chaplain, JFHQ MAARNG.

The Town of Belmont honors all of our Veterans and their families and fully supports the need to validate our brave men and women of the Armed Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice or suffered injury at the hand of the enemy during combat.
The Purple Heart Medal is specifically a combat decoration and it is our nation's oldest military medal. It was first created by General George Washington in 1782 and was known as the Badge of Military Merit.  We hope that you will join us in honoring and recognizing the sacrifices made by our nation's Purple Heart Medal Recipients.

"A charming addition to Pooh lore that will send readers happily back to the Hundred-Acre Wood." - Kirkus Review

Charlotte Gordon wraps up our One Book One Belmont Frankenstein events this fall, with a discussion of her groundbreaking dual biography, which brings to life a pioneering English feminist and the daughter she never knew. Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein , has each been the subject of numerous biographies. Yet no author has ever examined both their lives in one book - until now.

Ted Reinstein
Thursday, November 8th
7pm, Library Assembly Room
Part of the Friends Author Series, sponsored by the Friends of the Belmont Public Library

Join Chronicle's Ted Reinstein as he takes us through the wooden doors of New England's general stores and back in time, into a Norman Rockwell painting and into the heart of America.
New England's General Stores offers a nostalgic picture of this colonial staple and, fortunately, steadfast institution of small towns from Connecticut to Maine. This is where children of each generation take their first allowance to buy their very own penny candy. Locals have swapped stories at these counters from gossip to whispers of revolution. In tough times, the general store treated customers like family, extending credit when no one else would. Stubborn as New Englanders themselves, the general store has refused to become a mere sentimental relic of an earlier age.
